I know its fashionable to knock the GP service in this country
but I would literally be dead but for my GP's actions and so is
my wife.

I have a tear in my rotator cuff, did physio through my then
employer and then sent the report to my GP who referred me to
hospital, as I had already been through physio, a MRI was
offered,I was offered the opportunity of going to a private
clinic for it if I was flexible about the appointment time, took
about three weeks from referral to scan.
Was then given some options on treatment by the NHS, this was
three years ago, but is still happening now.

There are a few good ones. My mother (in her 90s) gets seen
usually within 24 hours. Her previous GP would say to call back
the next day, wait in a queue for 45 minutes, then offer
appointments between a week and two weeks later. The only time
they showed interest was when they were asked to sign a form,
which they then wouldn't do until a fee of £80 was paid. By a
pensioner.
On another occasion she was prescribed antibiotics by a GP. I
asked which ones, and then pointed out these had previously
caused issues; only then did the GP read the notes, and changed
the antibiotics.
Some are good. Many are not.

Just in case it's of any help - scroll through this young lady's
shorts, if you'll forgive the expression. She's something of a
shoulder expert, and although her focus is on weight lifters her
recommended movements to stabilise shoulders and relieve pain
don't involve any weights other than a few bands.

Thanks, I decided not to undertake the lottery of surgery, which
has a 50 percent probability of success, and the definition of
success is debatable, and went down the route of
strengthening/stabilising the shoulder, I was given a very good
program by the physio who my then employer used, who was a
extremely over qualified for the job she was doing young Czech
lady.
Has worked out really well very low weights and resistance bands
only, now only get the occasional ache, and no pain when moving.
I was really lucky and it has all worked out really well, with
no drugs or surgery, the potential long wait would have been if
I had to wait for NHS physio, getting the quick MRI because of
the NHS taking unused private slots at a very plush clinic, and
working for the MET and the free physio they provided, and
getting an extremely well trained sports physio, who was
incredibly competent and interested in helping, made it possible
and I appreciate that was just a very fortunate chain of events.
My wife is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon, and any health care
is a bit of lottery, be it private or NHS, and only as strong as
the weakest link, I was also lucky that the NHS doctor spent
time explaining the options and potential pitfalls of each type
of treatment, so now am able to manage the problem with 15
minutes of exercise per day.
