The Cup started as the RFU Cup - sponsored by various entities -
initially with 32 teams entering.
In 1981, it expanded to 56 clubs. In 1993 a further round was
added.
In 2004, it was expanded again, with two qualifying rounds, with
the Premiership teams entered in the 6th round (or the eighth if
you count the preliminaries), joining the last four surviving
other sides.
From 2005 to 2018, this was replaced by the Anglo-Welsh Cup -
though there was a separate National Trophy for the other sides
until 2008.
The Welsh teams dropped out and it became the Premiership Cup,
though for two seasons Championship sides were permitted to
enter.

Slightly disingenuous. Fair enough PRL only wanted the top 6
Championship sides in it but the Championship sides chose to
withdraw unilaterally. A decision which didn't go down too well
with the top Champ teams' supporters but that's hardly
surprising.

One of the few things the champ sides have ever been coordinated
on!

The demise of the A League is IMHO a barrier to the development
of youg players.

Sarries arranged extra games for their academy and youngsters if
I rember this and last season, and played Ampthill academy boys
a few times

Why can't pro clubs field A league teams utilising feeder clubs
etc? Surely this is good for aspiring grass roots players?

Currently, clubs are loaning players out on an ad-hoc basis.
Players tend to start out being lent to National 2 sides at 18,
then to a national 1 side the next season and then a Champ side.
The problem is that they get called back for the Prem Cup and to
act as tackle bag holders in case of injury.
Which as London Scottish found, can disrupt their selections.

Yeah I was thinking more of promoting promising grass roots
talent than just relying on your own pool of players...

Where do you think the Academy comes from?
They do not all come from the Harlequins Ams mini and youth.
The Prem talent scouts are watching and any player within the
catchment who shows promise is signed up by the time they make
the county under 16s. They also tend to get scholarships to a
rugby playing school. So Furbank never played a senior game for
his mini and youth club.
There are a few players who get missed, mainly because their
parents do not push them to play for a fashionable club. The
likes of Will Wand.
Some get signed and dropped, and get a second chance in the
National Leagues, like Ben Spencer.
But they are the exceptions.
