Having an exciting academy player as backup has been the norm
for most of the last 20 years at Quins.
Marcus is in some ways the anomaly. He was the promising academy
player - for most of the first game of the season, until
Catrakilis’s injury. Since then we’ve been lucky in being able
to pick up experienced backups like Allan and Evans.
Benson would have been a great backup but there was always a
risk that he’d be enticed away by the prospect of starting
elsewhere, and you can’t begrudge him the chance given Ireland’s
lack of an all round fly half.
Bellamy has similar promise, and with several other players in
the squad who can play the position - Furbank has done it
internationally, Slevin at U20 and I believe even Tyrone has
some club level time at 10 before he joined us - it feels like
we have enough to close games and cover for international
absence given that Marcus is guaranteed to start if fit and
available.

Please don't mention Tyrone at 10, it's a very silly idea.
I think Bellamy might be a little flimsy for 15 but he could
easily be a 10 option for us.

Why? If (and it's an if) the coaches think he can do a job
there, I'll trust in what they know and see.

Quite. He has absolutely no kicking game and is also not the
kind of fullback who acts as a playmaker either. He is a running
threat and an extremely good one, but he does not have many
other strings to his bow that would make him a useful 10.
Some sort of schoolboy 10 experience doesn't matter - Kyle
Sinckler played 10 when he was a youngster. Tyrone is a career
wing/fullback.

Sean Kerr has also played a bit at 10, and is a very good
kicker, we have more cover than we usually have had over the
past few years, and with the back up 10’s only Allan has really
been good, Evan’s has struggled in honesty.
10 is where you get the least return on your money, and you have
to sacrifice elsewhere in the team to have a decent backup.
I like the look of Bellamy, he just needs to be given a chance,
how to young players develop if never given any game time, we
need to move on from signing journeyman and trust youth much
earlier than we have been doing recently.
