Only five teams spent to the permitted salary cap last year: the
two finalists Bath and Leicester Tigers, plus Sale Sharks,
Saracens and Harlequins. That represents good news for Bristol
Bears, who made the top four despite spending just shy of
£6million, when deductions were taken into account, and bad news
for Saracens and Harlequins, who underachieved, finishing sixth
and seventh respectively while spending a similar amount to
Bath. Harlequins have plummeted to eighth this season, despite
spending to the cap

Can't read the article due to the paywall, but I guess well done
Bath in finding a way around the cap that's designed to make the
competition fair.
And sucks to be us spending all that money for little return.

On slide 19, it shows the
2024-25 SENIOR CASH & SALARY CAP SPEND
and the
2024-25 ACADEMY CASH & SALARY CAP SPEND
Our Academy spend is circa £800k.
From reading slide 39 on the Academy salary cap, I assume that a
large amount of the Academy figure above is not included in the
salary cap.
I'm assuming that a percentage of this will be transferred into
the "SENIOR CASH & SALARY CAP SPEND" over the next year.
So - I guess this will gobble up quite a bit of our salary cap
for next year.
Am I reading this right?

Probably. Players can now remain in the academy for longer and
be paid more (keeping them outside the cap) but you’d expect
several of this season’s breakthrough players to be promoted to
senior contracts as well. That said, we have the likes of Lewies
and Launchbury coming out of the cap, which offsets it.
The clubs will all have some kind of multi-year plan where they
will have a sense of who will be leaving, who will need a pay
rise and how to fit it all within the cap.
These things go in cycles. Bath were reportedly spending under
the cap last season, having recruited a lot of unheralded
players on relatively low initial contracts, but have now caught
up to that. Bristol were previously big spenders but have cut
back a bit in recent years.
The challenge for Quins and Sarries is that it’s more expensive
for players to live in and around London, so salaries are
inflated for that, but the cap doesn’t have a London weighting.
Maybe it should; the same money goes further in Exeter, Sale or
Newcastle than within the M25

It's a valid point but this season does feel like a plummet from
last season, or is it just me?
Re London Weighting, I agree completely. The rest will bleat but
it is a very fair point

The problem with London weighting is that it's too much of a
blunt object. Yes, of course it's a lot more expensive to live
in London, but on the other hand, it's a lot more expensive to
live in Bristol than Newcastle. Where do we draw the line?

Also, what evidence is there that it's a factor in recuitment?
