What a difficult season its been but the young players coming
through has been wonderful to see, particularly of late. The
future is bright & we can look forward to next season

I've been supporting Quins for long enough to know that we
periodically go through years where for whatever reason we're
forced to rely on younger players more than is ideal - but it
also tends to pay off in later seasons when their experience
accelerates their readiness to step up.
This has been a far tougher season than we might have
anticipated, but several young players will have learned a lot
from it.

There are also a number of other young players coming through
the academy who with luck will become very good players.
We had lost our way a bit in the years after winning the title,
with not playing our young players soon and often enough, and
signing some players we perhaps shouldn’t have to fill the gaps
that injuries inevitably bring, also signing short term injury
cover rather than trust the youngsters.
In a couple of years hopefully we will look at this season and
realise that the pain was worth it, the relegation season in
retrospect was a good thing for us, and with the experience the
young players have gained this year, this if we learn from it
should be the same.

We lost our way after the 2012 win too. A few years of really
muddled development and no clear approach for bringing the
academy lads up to senior level. There's signs that this is
starting to change and I hope so, as there's a lot of really
promising talent coming through.

I see the Furbank signing as a bit of a change in attitude as
well. Peak Tyrone Green, unplayable..power, pace, try scorer,
assists and puts fear in defences. Since his injuries, not the
same player. Quins of old would keep his spot for him and
backfill with a journeyman/old timer (Halfpenny) or someone a
level or two below (Nick David/Cam Anderson) as it was still his
shirt. Now, we've bought in someone who is a direct competitor
and unless Ty is leaving, needs to up his game massively to get
back to No.1
We maybe have a handful of untouchables (Smith, Dommers, Petti,
Cadan, BFA) everyone else needs quality competition around them,
whether from a kid or a seasoned pro but has to be worthy of the
shirt. Look how the Clamp/Kenners situation has worked out for
the 7 shirt.

I think you'd probably have to add Baxter to the untouchables.
Until his injury, he was by far our best prop, and I don't think
any of the stand-ins have reached that level.

I believed he's the BFA referred to.
But untouchable? Short term, maybe... but Hobson is showing he's
not to be underestimated, and he's making huge amounts of
progress with many years ahead of him. Currently player of the
season for me.

Furbank is a good signing and perhaps the start of signing
players who fill in the gaps, by adding quality, not just
filling the gaps, we also should be able to manage without
signing a journeyman 10 with Furbank, which has not really
worked since Tommy Allan, and bring Bellamy through.

There is an emerging core of Baxter, Hobson, Carr, E Williams,
Driscoll, Friday, Waghorn, and Bradley who have all had game
time this year.
If managed properly, they could be the backbone of this team for
years. Really important that we don't mess this up.
