Penguins are an invitational side that used to play both Oxford
and Cambridge in the run-up to the Varsity match. But also run a
7s side.

Ramblin' Jesters are a top sevens side with links to Ireland
with a quartered shirt - no idea where they got that idea:

Speranza22 came out of Abu Dhabi Harlequins:

The invitational sevens tours have been overshadowed by the
International series, and even they seem to be lower profile
that they were.

I think this concept could be a good idea if it is run during
the off season - then there are no conflicts with other rugby.
A few years ago there was the world club 7s - which I thought
was quite good fun.

Is there a global "off-season"?

I was thinking that it could take place during our summer.

As a concept 7’s is pretty much dead, the SVNS series attracted
12000 to the US event, and only seems via in Hong Kong and
Singapore, which is mostly for historical reasons, cutting the
number of teams from 12 to 8 has proved disastrous, and it is
haemorrhaging money for world rugby.
Probably only the fact that it is an Olympic event and receives
significant funding from the IOC, is keeping it running in its
present format.
This just seems like picking up players who have no where to
play since the changes and putting on a short competition to
sell shirts, from a company who lost relevance in the market
when adidas took them over, they have now been sold again and
are desperate to regain market share.
Will be interesting to see who is in the teams and where they
play.

The old Middlesex 7s attracted a club rugby crowd, as it was the
top 14 or so teams in the county, plus a few strong invited
teams.
So it was Richmond, Rosslyn Park or London Scottish against
Quins, when those rivalries meant something.
Professionalism has meant those sides are playing a different
game to Quins.
