One thing I'd add which ties into my many posts on the same
thing, is the number of younger players who have come through
the ranks and made their start this season or last season. I'd
be interested to know the average age and number of appearances
of the players in yesterday's squad.
Once again, Hobson has been the find of the season for me, and
Fin has some real competition/support in the loose head shirt.
Friday continues his progress, Bradley had a very strong game,
Staples had a dream start to his career, Williams put in a good
shift, and there were more. These boys could and should form the
core of our squad over the next few seasons. Jeez, Marcus looked
positively old out there!
The one player who seemed to have a quiet game was Murley. He
didn't do anything wrong, just didn't seem involved as much as
usual. Still, nearly 80 points and Cadan only scored 5. That
says a lot about what a team effort it was.

I think that the 6 or so tries we didn't score are more a level
of where we are. We will only get/create those chances against a
better side and we'll struggle to take all of them. We're just
not ruthless enough.
Daughter was at the game, as she up at Uni there, and she said
that the NRB fans she knows/spoke to prior to the game felt
confident of an upset and thought they'd get close.

Riley and Dommers took the plaudits (and rightly so) but just to
add to Quinky's point above, I thought the young second row of
Green and Williams together were really impressive. The real
test will come against more premier second row units, of course
- but I'm less concerned that we don't have the depth of quality
at lock now.
I do think refocusing on the academy pipeline is the right
strategy - it's just a shame it's taken so long for the suits to
realise that... and it's still the case that they may not have
realised in time to save their jobs - the first two months of
next season will answer that question.

As has been said, we can only play the team in front of us.
There were errors, we could have done more, but we should
counter that with the squad on the day. At the start of the
season, how many of them would have been first choice? Now
they've got minutes under their belts, tries (for some), and a
few have had a breakthrough season that could see them in the
running as first choice picks when we're back to full strength.

Staples might have scored but the lineout was pretty ropey! Very
funny game, we weren't amazing but racked up our biggest
Premiership score because the opposition waved us through. Now
we know what it feels like playing us on one of our regular
'off-days'.
Lots of errors and the ease with which Newcastle scored when
they actually got into our 22 was neither surprising nor
edifying, but far better Quins teams have struggled against the
worst sides in the league - so hats off to the lads for not just
pummelling Falcons, but for keeping the pace up for nearly the
whole match.
I saw Wade come in for some deserved criticism, and it was
particularly amusing seeing him try and go round the outside of
Cadan, but for me Josh Hodge was the absolute worst. 7 missed
tackles!
It was nice to be reminded of the depth of talent in the squad,
but that was never the issue. Let's hope it can be properly
harnessed next season.

It's a shame about Hodge - when he burst onto the scene a few
years ago he was an incredibly exciting prospect, and at one
point I thought he could be in England contention, but injuries
appear to have taken their toll.

We need to be cautiously optimistic with the youngsters. A good
performance yesterday but smashing a poor Newcastle team isn't
the bar to judge them against.
Agree that Hobson has been the unexpected find of the season,
and Friday and Waghorn are already first XV ready. But beyond
that the others still need time.
Williams looks a real prospect. For different reasons the jury
is out for me on Carr, Browne, Green, Bradley and Driscoll. They
all deserve more time, and I'd be delighted if they all develop
into top half Prem players, but lets not get ahead of
ourselves.
Great to see Porter back. With him and Friday we really should
start running teams off their feet for the full 80mins. Both
have quick service from the base and can snipe.
Would like to see Riley start against Exeter, Sarries and
Saints. Have always felt he has more potential than he's shown.
No doubt about his quality in the loose. And given Walker's form
and Turner going feel he deserves a chance at a run of games.

Thought Bradley showed what he was about yesterday against a
big, bruising midfield. Shame if the rumours are true and he's
off at the end of the season, as him vs Waghorn for the 12 shirt
would I think provide competition they both need to keep
improving... Carr for me has shown enough, at least
athletically, to convince me he'll appear on team sheets more
consistently next season. Green I wasn't convinced could make it
until yesterday - he looked really assured in running the
lineout and put himself about relentlessly. I wonder if Driscoll
is seen as the successor to WEv - who, for whatever reason, has
struggled for gametime since Gilmore took over. I'm not saying
Driscoll was at that level yesterday, but showed glimpses that
suggested he's of that same dogged mould.
Whichever way you look at it, there's now a depth chart forming
primarily from an internal pipeline producing young players who
clearly want to play for Quins - whereas before, we were making
up the numbers with numerous journeyman/Champ level signings who
will never have the same affinity to the club. Sure, some of the
young guns won't make the cut longer term - but with the
contracts they're on compared to players 4/5 years their senior,
it's worth the risk.
