I thought I read somewhere (and it may have been here) that
Wilson was trying to emulate Leinster's plan of having three
complete squads.

I thought Saints were spending below the cap. Pretty sure
Leicester spend up to it, though.

Both of which relate to my other point - not big name signings
and had been at Quins a good few years.
Here's the team in question:
Brown
Williams
Lowe
Turner-Hall
Monye
Evans
Care
Marler
Gray
Johnston
Kohn
Robson
Fa'asavalu
Robshaw
Easter
By my reckoning, over half of that team came up through the
club. Of the others, Kohn, Easter, Care and Gray might as well
have been club produced, having joined from lower clubs or at
the very start of their careers.
Add in the bench:
Buchanan
Lambert
Collier
Vallejos
Guest
Dickson
Clegg
Hopper
Half came through the club system, Dickson and Hopper joined
from the Championship, Clegg spent one season at Newcastle.
Developing our own players in the main is the best way forward
IMO. Otherwise, look beyond the big names for players to
develop.

I don't recall hearing that, but quantity over quality wouldn't
surprise me. Maybe the one thing he succeeded at.

Sorry, Quinks, this may be nit-picking but "My point remains
that we should import minimally" and "I'm not averse to bringing
in a few players, but the constant crying out for a raft of
signings is extremely short-sighted IMO." would seem to be at
odds with citing 8 players of whom 2 are imports.
Elsewhere on this board, I've been picked up (not by you) for
suggesting that IFW was a Wasps Academy player. Not completely
unreasonably, Jammy pointed out that he'd already played for
Cardiff.
As a contrast, Easter was almost 26 when he joined Quins
(admittedly from, in essence, a Champ club) and Kohn had
apparently played 30+ times for Bristol over 3 years. He wasn't
a superstar but he was a proven pro.

Also Joe Gray was a Saints guy for a few years before we picked
him up. He hadn't actually been with us very long when we won
the title. Care I'll grant you although he was a Leeds regular
by the time they got relegated. Kohn was already a solid pro.
But I think the important thing to recognise here is that the
guys who developed with us, and the home grown players, were
actually good enough that the foreign signings weren't trying to
put lipstick on a pig.
Marler, Brown, Monye, Robshaw, Lowe, Collier - all home grown
club stars, most of whom ended up being some of the best we've
ever produced. But a lot of home grown players have tried and
failed since then. Some have been fabulous - Marchant, Murley,
Kenningham, Baxter to name a few - but we've also suffered from
players not living up to their initial promise (Luke Wallace, or
Mark Lambert, or Ross Chisholm, or Charlie Matthews, or Rob
Buchanan, or Harry Sloan, or Sam Twomey, or Archie White, or
George Hammond, or Matas Jurevicius, or Lennox Anyanwu, or Harry
Browne, or Ollie Lindsay-Hague, etc etc) and at the moment we're
fielding a lot of guys who are leaning more towards the latter
group than the former. High hopes for some guys but I'm not sure
I see Musk, Riley, Bradley, Hyde et al are going to be mentioned
in the same breath as the products that showed up in the title
winning sides.
We are extremely stretched in certain areas (e.g. 12) and the
depth of quality is looking very shaky for next season in others
(wing, prop, hooker, lock). Wanting more signings to address
these areas makes sense, even if there might be some academy
players who would be good in a few years.

Possibly - but on the basis they had no cash to retain Furbank I
expected they were. If you’re right and they don’t then it’s
just even more insane that we do given the quality and depth of
the two squads

I thought the issue with Furbank was length of contract, rather
than cash, but it's all just rumours afaik.
