In rugby the key part about pace is acceleration. Very few
players hit their top end speed. Acceleration means you can get
ahead and get past players.
And yes, I think he's fast with Very good balance.

Cleaves probably needs to add more to his game. I don't mean he
has to be a massive hitter in defence or have a really good
kicking game, as I'd rather see a speedy winger focus on their
attack. But he could add more to his attack than just top pace,
as he won't get the space he got at junior level. As others have
said, work rate is key

Agree. I'd take Lynagh back in a heartbeat. Really strong all
round game. If England had picked him things would be different
but not much Quins could do to retain him once Italy came
calling.
Jury is out on Cleaves. From what I've seen, a threat ball in
hand and can finish but would question if he has the link up
play, defensive nous and aerial ability. Needs a run of games to
see if he'll make it really.

Murley has for the previous few seasons been statistically one
of the most complete wingers in the league. His only weak spot -
and the reason he doesn’t have more caps - is that he’s not tall
enough to be a regular high ball chaser.
Isgro, when fit, is excellent in that role. Quins probably need
another winger in his mould, and it’s clear we’re focusing on
having playmakers at 15 with Bellamy and Furbank.

Ehhhh... He's actually a really good chaser. He's much worse
defending kicks, and he's really not got a good kicking game
either - those are his weaknesses.

I often smile when pundits seem obsessed with tall wingers. Kobe
and Arendse aren't exactly giants, and Kolbe IMO has been the
best winger on the planet these past few years. Ok he's a unique
talent, but it does seem odd that the best team in the world
frequently pick smaller wingers.
Meanwhile, for a while England seemed to shoehorn Steward into
the back three seemingly based on his height. How did that work
out?
There are many smaller back 3 guys who aren't restricted by lack
of height. Capuozzo? Isn't Darcy Graham quite small?

IMO SA are the outliers in picking two small wingers. Capuozzo
may not be tall but Lynagh is 6’2”. Darcy usually has the “not
exactly tiny” Duhan on the other wing.

I accept they're outliers. They're also outliers in being world
champions (back to back) and no.1 ranked team. Maybe they're
doing some things right?
There's too much focus on single elements of a player's game
(e.g. Steward, Manu etc) at the expense of other areas (can't
defend, can't do much other than run straight). It's all very
well having a strong skill, but the overall skillset is more
important. Would you pick a fly half who was a brilliant kicker
but couldn't defend, pass or manage a game very well? Or who
only had one game plan? Some coaches seemingly do though...
Relying heavily on a single skill makes you vulnerable if the
gameplan you've put in place isn't working, but the players
don't have the right skills for any other game plan. Borthwick
should consider that.

I think it depends whether you're viewing the physical
attributes of a back 3 player from an attacking or defensive
perspective. The law changes that now prevent blocking has
diluted the superpower of the taller receivers (see Steward in
the 6N) and means a smaller faster winger can compete with a
much bigger man if he times his acceleration and jump for the
ball better. I'd add this is something that Isgro still needs to
work on

Worked well for SA with Handre Pollard
