If the decision is to do it, and it won't be, then the RFU will
start a world wide search!

You have discovered the infinite healey theorem.
If Healey talks for long enough he will almost surely say
something sensible.

Im not even sure it needs to be someone "replacing" Borthwick,
he's an excellent coach by all accounts. He maybe needs a DOR
type figure above him. Keep him as head coach?

I've always wondered why there is no such thing as a DOR at
international level. To me, it feels even more of a requirement
- the Head Coach title is a complete misnomer, as so much of the
role seems to be managerial. Negotiating with the clubs on
players (what position they play, how often they play, what
their work-ons are, when they have surgery, how they rehab...
the list goes on) is just one example that springs straight to
mind, but my point is how much "coaching" do they actually do?
In my mind, the role Borthwick now occupies has, since SCW came
in and "modernised" the traditional international coaching
setup, effectively been a DOR role... so why don't they just
call it that?
Such a simple thing as renaming the job might enable the RFU to
get it right in future. You're not looking for someone with a
recent at-the-coalface coaching CV - you're looking for someone
who can take a step back and take a wider view of things... and
then, in liaison with the Head Coach and other coaches, pick the
team that will go out and win on the weekend.
For me, the reason why DOR + HC setups work so well is that the
Head Coach is too close to the players on a daily basis in
training to actually pick the best team. Let the HC get in there
and roll around with the boys - whilst the DOR watches,
assesses, makes the necessary phone calls to keep things ticking
over, makes a rousing speech here and there, maintains an aura
that inspires the players to impress him... and then selects the
team to get the job done.
Quins are making the same mistake in my opinion - there's
something about having someone who sits a little back from and
above it all that inspires respect in and of itself. Gatland did
it during Wales' glory years (when he was paired up with a
proper Head Coach). Baxter has done it with Exeter in the past -
again, when he had a Head Coach and the players to fulfil the
vision - now he's doing it again, albeit a little more
single-handedly. Dowson seems to be taking on the same kind of
role with Vesty as his right-hand man.
From where I'm sitting and with my layman's eye, it feels
patently obvious that you need that top dog to be casting an eye
rather than holding the whistle. But I must be missing
something, since all these guys in suits think there's a better
way?

From memory, Rassie took this approach before 2019(?). He kept
strong player-coach relationships but was able to operate with
oversight of the entire pathway to the Boks team. He's not
exactly easy to replace as an individual but the set up worked
well!
