using modern sensors you wont be able to easily tell if the ball
was actually grounded so if thats what you mean using a chip it
wont easily work for either forward passes or grounding. They
can tell a direction or acceleration/impact/G Force etc but you
then need to tie that to a specific team going in a specific
direction, also you wont for example be able to tell if a player
had got their hand under the ball as the ball impacts, did it
hit the ground or a hand. A ball going forward changing
direction with which team, has a ball been kicked, tipped with a
hand or come off a knee theres no way to easily link that just
using electronic sensors yet. You are better off using cameras
and AI to check that out, you would have more success but they
wont be 100% accurate either and down to how many camera feeds
they have access to, my guess would be they would provide better
than the ref was able to due to multiple angles and feeds but
still would have grey areas.

I can go back to the pass to Prince Oblenski for his 2nd try on
youtube (which illustrates the momentum) - but, sadly, the 300
player a side game doesn't seem to be available.
I will find out if the steam driven version of youtube is
available anywhere . . . It should be - after all, they have
footage of the Flintstones.

Having all the technology and camera angles still won’t stop
scenarios like the one that cost us the game against Bath a
couple of seasons ago. TMO “ it’s gone forward Tempo”, Tempo
it’s gone forward from the pass”………repeatedly until Tempo
ignores the TMO with all the gizmos and awards the try. That
won’t be the only time that’s happened so it doesn’t matter what
tech you use it will always be reliant on a human.

I think this goes back to my earlier point about there not
actually being a problem that needs fixing. The refs kind of do
a decent job.
There are the occasional howlers, but no amount of technology
can force correct results for these (e.g. the Tempo call
mentioned by MW above). I also remember Wilkinson scoring a try
against Italy with his foot in touch - but the TMO was only
asked about the grounding and awarded it.
There are always issues with technology too.
E.g. #1 Assuming that you have smart rugby balls that know when
they are passed forward, then the refs will stop watching for
it. Which is okay, until it fails without warning and you have
loads of calls in one game that are not monitored.
E.g. #2 Assume you are playing in a hooley and this is wreaking
havoc on the passes. Would the smart rugby balls need to be
getting real-time feeds from wind sensors too? A ref could
easily just make judgements calls.
Basically though - as someone who works in the tech sector, I do
think that the more analogue approach is usually better.

Having a smart rugby ball doesnt help, it needs to know which
team is handling it and in which direction is forward, the
players would need to have some kind of team identifier on them
and you'd need to program the direction at game start, it would
be pretty impossible to tell which players hand for example
knocked a ball forward without a physical link from player to
ball being measured and that has to be from different parts of
the body. it's just too complex for a system to work accurately.
Players are in too close proximity to use near field RF
solutions as identifiers, it's not accurate enough to detect
which hand/arm touched a ball. Cameras and AI really are the
only way I think it can currently be done and they still have
room for error. we just have to live with it as part of the
game.
