Quins have historically been better at identifying undervalued
players and making the most of them than at hiring big names.
And we’ve got academy talent coming through on both sides of the
scrum, so it makes more sense to hire a guy who can do a job and
be moulded into a good squad player but won’t begrudge making
way for Streeter when he’s ready.

This is a genuine question which I ask knowing that many have
their finger on the pulse of the academy far better than I do.
Is Streeter genuinely showing high levels of potential or are
his appearances in the first team more due to necessity than
anything else? His size is obviously eye-catching but hopefully
that is also backed up with real quality?

I don't think we've seen enough of him to really say, although
he certainly performed manfully last season when called upon -
was it his first appearance/start for Quins in the BSKO while
aged 18? Needs must and all that, but it's pretty unusual for
someone that young to get thrown into such a game. Plus he's
been first choice for Eng U20 - can't ask for much more than
that really.
I reckon so far he's been as good as anyone could hope for at
his age but I don't suppose we'll have an idea of his full
potential for a while yet.

At the Quinssa AGM evening, Bomb certainly seemed to have
confidence in our academy front rows but was also careful to
stress that props like Baxter who are ready for the top level in
their early 20s are “rare as rocking horse shit”

Far be it from me to question Bomb but I think that depends what
you mean by “top level”.
Asher, Fasogban, Sela are all playing Prem/European rugby and
around the England squad. Iyogun is 26 now but apparently made
his European debut in the Champs Cup quarters at 19 and played
in a Prem SF at 20/21.
Props are getting younger

Tigers seemed keen to get him and we got in there first. Sounds
like others were sniffing about too. Hope that means he’s a
rough diamond we can polish into something decent. At least the
signings of him and Dun suggest the club is aware of one of our
significant problems.

Gilmore has said we need to strengthen the tight five. So we've
signed two players who I think could fairly be described as
journeymen. I would not expect either to be first choice. As I
said above, I really hope I'm wrong. I don't see how either
signing really improves on what we've got, though in the case of
Dun, if he can stay fit then he's an improvement on two of our
current senior locks.
These two signings don't do much to counter the suggestion that
we're doing things on the cheap. Hopefully this time next year
someone can quote this back at me and say how wrong I was

Yeah, that's quite a worrying statement from Jones. Props not
hitting their peak till their late 20s is about a decade past
it's sell-by date. Sinckler was playing for England at 23 a
decade ago. Plenty of test props under 25 these days.
