Sampie Swiegers in action for Airlink Pumas
Head Coach Jason Gilmore added: “Sampie’s got a good age profile
and is moving into his peak years as a tighthead. He starts the
puzzle of getting our tight-five to what we want to look like
over the next 12 months - certainly getting him and James Dun in
on that tighthead side of the scrum is a positive.
“He’s a project player for us and he knows he’s got some hard
work to get him where we want him to be, but we’re excited to
have him in our environment. He’s big body, loves contact and
the set-piece, so that bodes well for us.
“We’ve got some experience in the front row as well as Adam
Jones and Matt Ferguson in the building, so we’re confident
he’ll received the quality coaching required for his
       development.”

Sampie Swiegers, a "little-known" Pumas tighthead prop, was a
surprise invitee to the Springboks' 2024 alignment camp under
Rassie Erasmus, identified as a potential long-term successor to
Frans Malherbe. As of March 2026, Swiegers (27) has signed with
Harlequins after being scouted by Erasmus for his potential in
       the tight five

I like the thinking of bringing in a couple of big lumps. We
need some grunt. No idea if this guy is any good though. Anyone
       able to share any knowledge?

He's highly rated by Rassie, enough to fast track him into a
Springbok camp. It's not like they're short of world class
       props, do that speaks volumes.
I believe his father was a decent prop too.

Am I right in thinking he doesn't play for one of the teams in
URC / europe? Level below that?

Yes. I think that is correct. He is in a Currie cup team which
is the old provincial competition from before the super rugby
       franchises cane along

I'm trying not to be too negative and I will give him the
benefit of the doubt and hope he works out, but hard to get too
excited. A 27 year old "project" player who plays in the second
tier in his country and has been invited to a wider springbok
training squad once, 2 years ago.
I know props come into their prime later, I know rassie is a
visionary and a nod from him is the highest blessing one can
achieve on earth and I know "bomb will work his magic" but as
far as I can see, we've just signed a replacement for titi.
As I say, I really hope proves to be the next Wilco and I will
reserve judgement until I see him play
