I'm afraid you'll have to perform a u-turn on that one, Deadly.
The pronunciation of the 'u' in 'universal' acts as a consonant
sound, meaning using 'a' is the correct option. It's not a hard
rule based on the existence of the vowel itself, it's about the
       sound.
       An umbrella.
       A universe.
       An uncomfortable political situation.
       A usurper.

But - we can agree that it is only words that start with vowels
that need "an" in front of them, can't we?
It would be good to put this subject to bed after spending an
hour or so reading the posts.

I was so tempted to open up that line of attack as well! It
       would be an honour :-)

Rules about using an before a vowel
The rules for using "an" before a vowel are as follows:
Use "an" before words that begin with a vowel sound, even if
they start with a consonant. For example, "an hour" because the
"h" is silent and the word sounds like "ow."
Use "an" before words that begin with a consonant sound, even if
they start with a vowel. For example, "an hour" because the "h"
       is pronounced.
Use "an" before words that begin with a consonant sound, even if
they start with a vowel. For example, "an hour" because the "h"
       is pronounced.
Use "an" before words that begin with a consonant sound, even if
they start with a vowel. For example, "an hour" because the "h"
       is pronounced.

These rules help ensure clarity and consistency in writing,
especially when referring to indefinite nouns.
