If the player was that candid then I can only guess that he
already knows he won’t be here next season.

i know him pretty well, it wasn't a first meeting. he did also
mention he doesn't know if he will be around next season or not.

after the match yesterday, i got talking to a current player. he
wasn't certain but seemed to think there would be an
announcement potentially next week, and that our new head coach
will be mark mapletoft...
He also mentioned that we had gone after several high profile
southern hemisphere coaches (inc scott robertson), but they
spoke to tabai matson about his experience at the club and that
put them off joining...
Now of course this may be true, but I find it unlikely. The
players might know by now, but I certainly don't see how they'd
know that other possibilities have spoken to Matson and been put
off

You know, if we get Mapletoft, I'll be okay. Obviously I'd like
a top coach, but it doesn't look like we're getting one, and we
need *someone* at the top. If he's allowed to sack parts of the
failing coaching team and find good replacements and he's
allowed to recruit well, it's got to be better than what we're
going through now.

Several online articles have alluded to SH coaches having been
deterred by the treatment of Tabei, I am sure the players will
read some online rugby articles.

Yeah but some of the online stuff probably strays into
"a-guy-who-drinks-in-the-same-pub-as-Jason-Leonard's dog's pal's
owner's brother-in-law's favourite Richmond Park squirrel told
me...

Surely the Grand Plan cannot be to appoint the person who has
already been Head Coach at Quins during the highly successful
John Kingston era, that just make any sense

Seems like the club are clearly scrambling having been knocked
back by preferred targets.
The failure to move quickly and get coaching and recruitment
aligned for next season is really concerning.

We’ve been here before. We’ve had a worldwide search that
resulted in a massively disappointing outcome. For a brief
moment I had some hope but that quickly evaporated. It’s quite
something to take the history, assets and talent of our club and
make it so undesirable but am I surprised it looks like yet more
years of inconsistency? Not in the slightest.
I agree, although not my favourite choice by any means,
if we wait until the last minute we can totally write off next
season.
The new coach needs to be able to decide the coaching and
playing lineup for next season as much as they can.
At the moment we are like a drifting ship, with no captain.
