I do hope the use of the word "descent" is not a Freudian
       slip...

It's true, but I think the leadership aspect is probably
undervalued on here when we're talking about what Quins need.
For all the talent in the side, only Marcus is anything like a
       leader in that backline.

which do you think a coach would take? I got told a few years
back at one of those "State of the Union" type meeting that we
aspired to be Northampton. Same size ground, sell outs every
home game, good match day atmosphere, running rugby (ish). I
assume they spend up to the salary cap. So why are they top of
the table and we're fighting Newcastle to be last?
       >
       --- End Quote ---
As a coach, is that really a draw? If you come into a team at
the top of the table, you’re replacing (or worse, displacing) a
DoR or HC who was almost certainly popular with the fans and
you’re trying to maintain a top of the table position in a very
       competitive league.
Alternatively, if you take on a club with an open vacancy, and a
lot of playing talent but which is underperforming, you have a
much better chance of improving things and being seen as a
       success.
Recent results should matter less to any serious coach than the
talent pool, training setup, medical/S&C team and the club’s
willingness to invest. I think we can all agree that our most
successful top coaches were Deano and COS. One joined following
our relegation season (and was offered the option to exit and
declined) and the other in the wake of the most heavily
publicised scandal in Prem history. But they bought into what
the club was trying to do, and the unproven talent that was in
       the academy.
One report I have seen on Deans is that the idea is for him to
act in a role where he’s mentoring and developing Gilmore until
the latter is fully ready to be HC. From what I can see, Gilmore
is still popular with both players and management but had not
prepared to take on the HC role and was caught out (as were the
club) by the WRU moving for Wilson just before the start of the
       season.
That makes sense as an approach if the club believes Gilmore can
be a success with more time and the right development.

Ideally, Deans for at least a season would be ideal if the plan
is to develop Gilmore. I understand Gilmore is popular with the
squad, but that isn't always a great indicator. I think we've
all probably had a manager at some stage who's been more your
mate then a boss and that environment isn't always conducive to
       a top performing vibe.

That goes well with our pack's attitude to rucks in some matches
       - "we'll have a look and get back to you in 5-10 business days"
