It was also very similar to a move that an Irish player had made
the week before (albeit targeting an offload in the tackle
rather than a 9), and only conceded a knock on advantage. He
might reasonably have expected similar treatment...

       The new law says
"A player who is, or was part of the maul may not play an
opponent who is near it (within 1m), and who is attempting to
       play the ball away."
There is a similar law trial for rucks.
If he only played the ball, and I thought he got the 9''s arm,
then it is only a deliberate knock on.
though it is still very high risk, as the chance of knocking
the ball back with an Italian arm round your waist is slim.

So not that similar at all really

Depends on how long Itoje's arms are. I reckon they're longer
       than 1m

Why, does that change how close the opponent is to the maul?

If they are over 1m away from the maul and Itoje can reach more
than 1m to disrupt the ball, then yes.

OK but that's not what happened is it? You gotta stop inventing
reasons to blame the refs for things man, they make enough
actual errors to focus on. Maro had Italian players between him
and the scrum half (who was clearly within 1m) and he stretched
over enough to slap at the ball. His elbow is on an Italian
player! None of this is a worthwhile argument!

The 9 was nowhere near 1m away but Itoje played the ball not the
       9. Or doesn't it matter? I thought it did.

He didn't get the arm. It was definitely the ball. Check the
replay. But it went forward, and I guess that was considered
enough of an offence for the card.

Yes, he practically jumped over the maul and slapped the ball
forward. It was a pretty blatant offence.
