Robertson's contract clause lapses once the team plays NZ this
year. I think that means he'd be available to England after the
Autumn?

Why’s Razor the answer? Looked at dispassionately, he’s just
been fired from the top job at a Tier 1 country having lost the
dressing room.

So if the opposition know about it and can focus on him, and he
still manages to be successful, bust tackles, and provide
go-forward, is that not a huge success? It means they're
spending resources failing to prevent something from happening.
If England skip him, there are fewer defenders elsewhere, and if
they don't then he's going through those guys anyway.
If it was that simple to defend against why weren't they able to
defend against it? I feel like you're making a good point that
happens to be a hypothetical rather than what's actually
happening on the pitch.
This is all very reminiscent of the half time talk that Graham
Henry gave the Lions in Australia, having a go at them for
over-reliance on a rampaging Scott Quinnell...

It feels like we are already in that position of EJ's end
period, and that a new voice and energy is what's needed.
Borthwick and energy don't go in the same sentence. England set
up not to lose, rather then go out and win and the coaching is
stale and boring and I'm not entirely sure any soul searching.
Even when we did win the ball back we didn't even know what to
do with it.
Itoje isn't at the races and needs some time away from the game
I think too.

I think we're seeing why Eddie didn't make Maro his captain. He
doesn't seem to actually inspire players on the pitch, and if
his insipid media appearances are anything to go by, I can't
imagine he's motivating them in the dressing room either. I'm
really surprised as I thought he'd be an excellent captain,
but...
Anyway, Borthwick doesn't seem to have any original ideas and
loses coaches like they're going out of fashion. It's a
ridiculous state of affairs, made even more ridiculous by the
esteem he holds Wigglesworth in, given the latter's total lack
of output. Wigglesworth is now on his 3rd? 4th? role in the
side. Surely the best coach for any given role should have the
job, rather than some sort of Minister Without Portfolio with a
track record of very little success?

True, but that would leave him with just a single 6 Nations and
some warm-up games before heading into the World Cup next year.
If we're going to change coaches, better that it be before we
start playing the new Nations Championship in the summer.

I read somewhere that he's vastly exceeded his minutes played
this year (and indeed in previous seasons), given the Lions tour
and England duty. He needs a sabbatical.

Watching the game at the stadium I thought England were looking
to play a more expansive game for the first 20 minutes as they
moved the ball along the backs more times than the previous 3
matches in total, so it can be done. Why they then reverted to
the standard boring kicking tactics is beyond me.
The half time talk was clearly safety first, safety first. There
is plenty of talent in the English game so it is obviously down
to the coaching set up.

Exactly this about Maro. Eddie may not have made him captain but
Borthwick, McCall and Farrell all have which would suggest that
he's got some leadership skills.

That is the point for me, in the match situation, not worth the
risk and as Captain you have to be thinking that any 50/50 is
risky with a ref who has been clear on these things all day.
As for the "No Tier 1 Clause" not worth the paper it's written
on as is a violation of his employment rights so can't be held
up. He may lose $40k NZ of his settlement but what we'll be
paying him it won't matter.

The commentators obviously hadn't got the implications of new
global law trial 16.18, and I wonder if Itoje was the same. It
certainly looked like he was reaching to knock the ball back.
And yes, maybe this was the wrong time to do it with a man in
the bin for a few more minutes, but how often do you even get
the chance to do something like this? Most attempts you end up
squashed between a couple of burly forwards with no chance of
moving towards the ball.
