Didn’t the whole Saints team suddenly develop bulk over 1 off
season which in reality isn’t a great deal of time. And if
anyone has ever tried to add bulk quickly (naturally) with just
diet and weights it take a blooming long time to get big gains.

Google seems to suggest that Freeman put on 15kg. Pre-season is
essentially 3 months. The recent Telegraph article had the
reporter putting on 1.7kg in a week despite (by his own
admission) not following the 4,000-calorie diet exactly.
It’s not completely unfeasible

I have tried doing the opposite many times. Fail.

A couple of decades ago I recall reports of players bulking up
relatively quickly. The common line was that the development of
creatine as a supplement was a factor. Creatine is now just
another supplement that many people use.

This was covered by the BBC in 2020. Surprised it didn't attract
more comment, but no professional sport wants the spectre of
drugs (just look at Wimbledon. 2 winners, both tested positive,
one said it must have been on my physio's hands during a massage
and the other that her melatonin tablets must have been tainted.
No one believed them but tennis didn't want the sponsors to run
so adopted a low 'plausible deniability' bar). The other thing
to pick up on is retirements. The moment you retire you are
exempt from drug testing, so retiring and then coming back is a
good way of using drugs before returning to sport. Nadal was
very open about this, retiring to use drugs for rehabilitation,
and the NFL camp guys have spoken about how a drug taking in the
off-season is normal. Yyson Fury's 'retirements' are very
convenient for example.
Uk and Sweden have the highest doping standards in the world.
Kenya and South Africa amongst the lowest. It is expensive to do
and embarrassing when someone is caught.
Rodchenkov talks in detail about how his job was not to catch
dopers, it was to make sure they would not get caught in
competition. Sadly, the real question is what nation or sport
benefits from catching their representatives in the act?

I believe a lot of sports do drug testing in the off season too.

I’ve read a lot of ex players books and they nearly all mention
having tests at some point or other. As quickly as they add
substances to the testing lists there are new ones that aren’t
on there yet. I would hope that the amount of sportspeople who
die prematurely or suffer horribly from the effects of drug
taking is enough to put them off taking them.

Also, as new drugs develop, and tests get better, it seems that
there are better drugs to mask the illegal ones.
