Fissler was talking about him as DOR. And I'd better say first
up I'm arguing from wanting balance, not because I'm a huge fan
of Gatland.
The arguments that he's another generation might apply if he was
going to be head coach. They also might have applied to Deano
before he came here. Some people aren't made to be in charge of
a successful Lions tour. Look at SCW. It was a worth while
experiment, could SCW convert his methods to the Lions, but it
failed. That didn't make him a terrible coach, just not one for
the Lions. Similarly with Wales. Wales have been in a death
spiral for so long, bouyed up by a few bright sparks, but who
could have done a better job? Who would have wanted to try? How
do we know it wouldn't have been worse under someone else?
Sooooooo.... Gats has the experience at many levels, Prem,
Lions, International. His record isn't stellar, but neither is
ours. I do tend to think having that experience is better than
taking a punt (again!) on someone cheaper, less experienced and
that we have no reason to expect to succeed. If I was the board
and they want him, I'd tie him in to a very performance related
contract with an easy exit clause if it doesn't work out.

I don't think you can use that argument when it comes to Gatland
and the Lions. He was undeniably good with the Lions on previous
tours. It was his last tour that was a dismal failure with
negative tactics and a wildly outdated approach. And you are
forgetting just how awful he was in NZ.
Fair point about him having a head coach, his partnership with
Shaun Edwards was what made Wasps and Wales successful. That
does just punt the problem down the line a bit, though.
I dunno I'd much, much rather us go for Robertson, but as much
as I think Gatland is seriously past it I'm sure having a hugely
experienced and previously successful coach who might just be
driven by a burning sense of injustice and a desire to prove
everyone wrong isn't the worst idea in the world. Or he could be
the management equivalent of Jamie Roberts. Who knows.

I don't agree with this point.
Quins is probably a very appealing club for someone.
We are in a good location.
We have money.
We have a good, passionate fan base.
We have a 1/2 decent team.
We are massively underperforming.
So, basically, any 1/2 decent head coach / DOR should be able to
come in with a vision to say "this is a club that I can
improve".
Look at it the other way.
If you take over as the Bath head coach.
Your results can only stay the same or get worse.
As a high performing, ambitious individual (which a lot of
sports people are), what would your motivation be for joining
that club?
