Uncontested lineouts.

Why doesn't the first person in the line always pretend to jump?
Just enough to register with the ref?

I thought that there had to be someone lifted.
Just jumping is not enough.
I like idea of the law. But, I think that the hooker should
still try to throw the ball straight.
At a recent game a went to, the hooker threw the ball at 45
degrees. I think this action should still be penalised.

I've seen that penalised before. I think it's still supposed to
be vaguely straight.
I do think the "uncontested" isn't a great criterion, because
sometimes it's not contested because the ball is just too far
away due to being squint.

Hadn't realised lifting had to be involved. Thought you could
just contest it.

If the non-throwing team does not lift a teammate to compete for
the ball, then play shall continue.

"The ball must:

The person at the front of a defensive lineout is usually a
lifter, not a jumper, and is almost always expected to be either
lifting or driving asap

Yep, in the community game when the law was changed we were
advised to ref it as:
- Someone has to be properly lifted (ie not just a jump).
- The lift can be anywhere in the lineout, ie doesn't have to
be at the same position the ball is thrown to.
- The throw still has to be vaguely straight, ie if it's
uncontested, but the jumper has to lean out of the lineout to
catch it, you'd ping that.
- If it goes over the top it still has to be straight.
To be honest, it just formalised the way we'd been refing it for
a while.
It's a bit of a standing joke amongst refs that every time a
ball is thrown in, someone, somewhere on the touchline will
shout "Not straight." I remember refing at a club in the region
and I was perfectly positioned to judge the throw - it was fine
- and I heard a voice from the other side of the pitch, 30 or 40
metres towards the other tryline, shout "Not straight."
