I think this is really stretching things. It’s natural that we
have an inflated opinion of Quins players but if we are being
objective, Porter is a solid Premiership 9 but he’s hardly
tearing up trees. The fact that he wasn’t picked for Englands
squad on the summer I think is a good barometer for where he is
at. Maybe he would have been the next man up. Maybe. That would
make him Englands 5th choice… add in a couple of foreign players
in Tomos Williams and maybe Gus Warr and we’re looking at Porter
being maybe the 6/7th best 9 in the league… which puts him in
the bottom half of starters.
I’m not trying to knock Porter. Just trying to be pragmatic
about it. I do agree that Porter has been better than Quirke
recently. But I see Porter as a safe pair of hands rather than
someone who can push Quins to the next level. Who knows, maybe
Quirke would thrive in the Quins environment. Maybe he would
continue to disappoint on his potential.

As for Furbank.
Spending what would, presumably, be a large chunk of salary cap
on an old, injury prone player who doesn’t significantly improve
our best XV is, in my opinion, madness. I would much rather a
prop/2nd row/back row/9/12 over a fullback.

Well, teams don't always have the same starters, so it's
probably the top half.

Are you suggesting we should judge the quality of Quins starters
by comparing them against squad players from other clubs? I
mean… that’s a guaranteed losing recipe.
Well yeah, if you want to compare Quins starters against squad
players from other clubs then probably most of our players fall
in the top half. In fact, if they don’t, then there’s something
seriously wrong.
Personally, I think comparing starters vs starters is a better
comparison.

My point is that many teams have more than one starter and
rotate. Sale have Warr and Quirke, for instance. It would be
inaccurate to describe one as the starter and the other as a
squad player.

It wouldn't. Warr has started the vast majority of his
appearances for a good few seasons now, and has far more
appearances than Quirks, who is usually (but not exclusively)
the man on the bench

I must admit I'm struggling to see how the Saints captain and
superb international fullback with a great all round game
doesn't improve our XV. And he's 29 - hardly old!

Believe this signing is to help Marcus Smith. Quins lack a 2nd
playmaker in the team (apart from when JEvans or Benson play
12). Esterhuizen was far more than a crash ball centre and often
stepped into 10 for his hands so smith could attack the outside
channels. They haven’t had this since he left and fireback being
comfortable at 10 allows this to happen

Quirke has had a lot of injury in the last couple of years,
which is why Warr started more.

Exactly this. There’s an argument that we pick a 9 based on be
oppo. If you want to run big French forwards off their feet and
play at a higher tempo, it’s Raffi. For a more box-kicking game,
it’s Gus.
What both of them have which I don’t see from many 9s is
aggressive defence allied (in Gus’ case) with the ability to
really get under the skin of an oppo
