A lot would be riding on the ongoing development of the centres
but it's certainly not too shabby!
I've also wondered for a while if the 6-2 bench is the way. Get
the most from the starting pack for 50/60 and bring on energy
which I've felt we've lacked in recent years.

Possibly Murley, possibly Beard or Northmore or both. Add a
couple of injuries, and it's hard to get rid of players like
Anderson or David because you won't have a squad.

I don’t have any problem retaining David , but Anderson is just
not good enough, if we have Furbank, green, and David, keeping
players like Anderson is very hard to justify.
We need to wait to see if Furbank is coming, but one of our
problems over the last few seasons has been keeping too many
players who are realistically not good enough, which seems to
have impacted on keeping some of our better young players who
have left.
We sometimes seem to value quantity over quality in our squad,
except at inside centre.

I get that, but what is our squad if we lose all those to
international duty / rest and have an injury to David or
Cleaves?
I think that's the issue with getting Furbank in particular: he
is highly likely to be selected for the England squad.

Can't speak too much to the last part (perhaps saw some evidence
this summer with Trenholm+Jibulu) but the first bit seems bang
on.
Obviously not all the squad can be Test level but I first
noticed this when it seemed like everyone in the title winning
year who hadn't already left received renewals in the year or so
afterwards. We have a club-like atmosphere and culture that's
clearly strong in the professional set up but that doesn't
always help... Calling title winners not good enough might sound
like a contradiction in terms but a player is not the same
quality over the entirety of his career.
My memory fails but I don't remember there being great
recruitment from 2021 until some good pickups from Wasps/LI etc.
The key issue is not so much whether Els/Anderson etc. are Champ
level or a bit above but the opportunity cost of blooding
younger (and usually, therefore, cheaper!) players. They might
not cut it themselves but you've saved cash and some will
certainly make an impact.

Even if Marcus was off I can't see that signing Furbank would be
an appropriate response.

If you guys are in essence replacing Anderson in the squad with
Furbank, that has to have a major impact on your salary cap
space.

My point was that we have too many players in our squad, who
don’t particularly offer that much, so we could lose a few of
those, and use our academy players in exigencies.
So we could perhaps dispense with the services of a number of
players, which would allow us to maintain headroom.

Agree.
We will need to lose a lot of players on Anderson's salary to
equal Furbank.
