Is Spencer actually better than Porter for what Quins need?
Especially factoring in age and likely price? Williams or
Mitchell I could see as an upgrade, but not as players we could
easily attract.
Porter is one of the better bits of recruitment we’ve done.
Suits our game plan, unlikely to be on top dollar and while he’s
been part of some poor team performances I can’t remember many
games where he’s underperformed the rest of the team. His
support lines in particular have been really effective and have
finished a lot of tries that would otherwise have gone begging.
He’s unlikely to become a regular international, but he’s been
called up to England A several times, which is in many ways the
ideal level for the core 1st XV.
I might be more interested in recruiting an additional scrum
half if we didn’t have Friday developing. We have not seen much
of him yet, mostly because England U20s broke him, but he’s
consistently impressed me and the coaching squad see a lot of
potential in him. The main justification for recruiting another
senior 9 would be for him to have someone to learn from - but I
am not sure how much he needs that given the players we already
have and the fact that he will have DC (and his dad) to call for
advice.

On the RUW pod this week, Chris Jones reporting this is a done
deal. Your source was spot on that Saints were only offering a
1-year deal.

Given how well he and Marcus combined in the AIs last year, I
think he'd be the perfect type of 9 at Quins. We've been most
successful when the SH runs the game and Marcus is able to
create space, and this is exactly what Spencer does for Bath,
with Russell doing an equivalent job to Marcus. One of the less
discussed reasons for our recent decline is (in my opinion) the
fact that Porter doesn't boss the game from 9 as much as Danny
used to, and it puts extra pressure on Marcus, especially as
he's already got a tendency to overplay when he feels he needs
to.

If Furbank joins, it's been suggested that Tyrone will play more
on the wing. We're pretty well stocked there already, so does
that suggest someone moving on?

Since Furbank can play 10 as well, we could lose players like
Jarrod Evans and Anderson, rather than any of the wingers, we
really need to look at a number of players and really consider
if they add anything, we have more than a few who are not really
contributing to the squad anymore and some who are just not good
enough.

Just means picking David less often and not letting Isgro get
away with playing like an idiot...
He'd be nailed on for a bench spot if he's not starting, and
he'd push the first choice wings at least as much as Cleaves is.
That's a positive, not a negative.
And he'd play 15 pretty often given a fit Furbank is likely to
be involved with England quite a bit.

You've got to take into account how many players will be off on
international duty. Furbank, Smith, Isgro at the very least.
Possibly Murley, possibly Beard or Northmore or both. Add a
couple of injuries, and it's hard to get rid of players like
Anderson or David because you won't have a squad.

I'd reckon David and Anderson. Green extended his contract last
year, and I would like to think it would have been for 2+
seasons at least

What do we reckon to (on the assumption he joins) the fact that
we'll probably be a 6/2 team if he joins -
9. Porter
10. Smith
11. Murley
12. Waghorn
13. Beard
14. Isgro
15. Furbank
22. Friday
23. Green
With Cleaves as 3rd winger, Northmore as 3rd centre.
Guessing Benson, Kerr & Slevin would be next men up for other
positions in the backs and one of Townsend or Murray being 3rd
SH.
