I really don't think there is any danger of that happening.

Well, their most likely opponents are Argentina - whose QF
record is almost as good as Ireland's is dire.

I think England could face Italy in the last 16, Australia in
the quarter final and then Ireland/Argentina? SA, NZ and France
all in the other half of the draw...

I'd be happy to lay a tenner with you that it'll be Georgia, not
Italy

The Italians beat them last year, and seem to be improving,
Georgia is falling into political instability, and as their
rugby program relies heavily on a pro Russian billionaire, you
have to wonder about the future of the place, testing
experimental chemical weapons on the pro European Union
protesters is not a good look.
Rugby may soon be the least of their concerns.

Cant see Georgia getting close to this Italy team - who are
improving all the time. They gave RSA a better fight than most
of the top tier nations did this autumn, and have beaten Aus
twice in a row. Cant see Georgia getting anywhere near them.
Personally I hate this new format - almost no real jeopardy in
the groups - with zero chance of an 'England 15' or 'Australia
24' happening - every tier 1 and 2 team will be through to the
last 16, and you'll have a handful of tier 3 teams into the
knockouts who will have likely won 1 game of 3 - will be a race
for 'who can concede the least beating by tier 1 nations to
qualify'. I get there will be jeopardy in terms of who faces who
in the last 16, but its just rubbish compared to the traditional
format

Expanding to 24 teams has really made the logistics of the draw
difficult, 32 would be much easier to manage, but you would be
scraping the bottom of the barrel for teams, or perhaps 20 teams
in 4 groups of 5 and top two going through.
But the world rugby let’s go to 24 teams and have a 16 teams
qualifying, has meant that the seeding is only really for the
group stage and then it become luck of the draw after that.

Some (mainly not in England) would argue that the 20 teams in
2023 resulted in some luck of the draw

One positive is that Rugby will get some useful exposure in the
Tier 3 Nations, which is kind of the point of the exercise,
n'est ce pas?

You really need 16 or 32 anything else has greater or lesser
luck of the draw, and means that you can’t guarantee to keep the
top 2 ranked teams on different sides of the draw.
Both draws have worked out pretty well for England, but it works
for me, with the draw so far ahead the rankings are going to be
different anyway.

16 could still give you an element of the draw having an impact.
The nature of a draw is that there is a random element and that
means luck is involved. Plus the difference in standard between
the top 10 and everyone else (and even within the top 10) is so
stark. Would Fiji, Scotland or Italy (8-10 in the current
rankings) beat SA or NZ?
Unless we either go down to 8-10 teams (not exactly growing the
game) or start creating pools based solely on rankings at the
time the competition actually starts (which is completely
unfeasible), there is always the always the chance that draw
will be kinder to some.
