Rainbow quarters sound great and might help the players
recognise each other, which would be a step up.
Um, am I losing my mind or is it not actually fairly traditional
for the home team to change their strip in case of any potential
clash?

We usually wear the quarters at Kingsholm, as had already been
suggested, because it normal away strip is predominantly red, so
it's to avoid problems. Back in the late '00s, we had an away
strip where 2 of the four quarters were white.

It is but that's an ancient tradition. Regarding the Prem all
clubs have to have an away/change strip (I'm sure you know this)
and presumably to help replica shirt sales they normally wear it
for away games. I don't think there are many clashes in the Prem
these days.

Yes- you are correct.
Historically, a travelling team would only pack one shirt as
they had limited space in their kit bags. If there was a clash,
then the home team would then switch kits.

Perhaps they thought the pink kit was jinxed and wanted to see
if we were just as bad in the Quarters. They wore the butchers
apron one in 20/21 because they kept winning in it. Sadly we
were equally bad although our only two wins have been in the
Quartered kit but they were both at home.

I don't think I've ever seen it in writing, but there seem to be
some league rules about the design and use of alternative
strips. There tend to be waves of similar designs and colours,
and the alternative strip tends to have less of a structured
pattern than most primary kits (it used to be "predominantly
white" but I think that's changed).
Selection of which kit is used I think balances commerciality
(wearing it often enough that fans feel encouraged to buy it)
with ensuring the teams are playing in sufficiently different
kits that players can easily told apart, and from some
commentators' comments that now includes whether it works for
people who are colourblind.
Glos and Quins are presumably distinctive enough to be told
apart under any circumstances. But I'm guessing that reversing
the quarters isn't different enough to work when another team's
primary kit could be confused by colourblind fans.
