Brian would probably have had a semi permanent ban if he were
playing now! I saw him playing against Leicester once when he
threw in at a lineout, then just grabbed Richard Cockerill
almost as the ball left his hands. They seemed to grapple a few
seconds, Pitbull looked up as if to check the ref wasn't
looking, then decked Cockerill. Peach of a punch.
Sadly, it was right in front of the touch judge.
Nowadays it would be a straight red. Then? A penalty.

Cockerill was at The Stoop in his coaching days and created a
furore by using extreme and abusive foul language during the
course of the game. He couldn't be sent to the stands as thats
were they were put in those days...

In essence, Eben’s response rankles because it goes against
something which rugby holds dear: respect for the officials.
I don’t believe that Eben is a fool so he will know how a vocal
proportion of the SA fans believe their team is treated. Airing
dirty laundry in public will only add fuel to that fire and in
doing so further undermine the officials.
It’s not something I believe I have seen any other player do;
whatever their private feelings about the severity of any ban.
Reading the judgement, one could also come to the conclusion
that the case was handled in a less than edifying manner by Eben
and his legal counsel.
At the very least, failing to complete the paperwork on time is
unlikely to help win favour with the panel. I’d also question
the impact of only at the very last minute asking for Ramos and
Mann to be at the hearing. Especially having initially suggested
they were not needed.
Were one so minded, it is however also possible to see those
actions as another sign of a lack of respect for the panel.

My "and" was in response to a post which (I believe) is about
Even commenting on the incident.
I understand your post, and I respect your views. I see things
slightly differently, but that's irrelevant.
To my knowledge, the latest episode is Eben giving his version.
He's apologetic and acknowledges he did wrong. He's not
complaining about the outcome of the hearing or the punishment.
Hence I don't quite get the logic of someone suggesting he
should just be quiet about it.

It is his version but I guess I'm not sure why he felt the need
to share it. As I mentioned, it's not something that we
typically (ever?) see in rugby and the unusual will always risk
raising suspicion.
Secondly, the sentiment that I am left with is that he doesn't
feel he did much wrong; it was all an accident. Purely my read
but given that his whole defence was that it was accidental
contact with the eyes, lines like "other factors that played a
role" only add to my feeling. Not to mention his whole
justification for the post.
In which context, despite what he says I'm not sure I believe
that Eben truly accepts that this is a suspension which he
deserves.
