Given they've been piling into the Tom Curry discourse with some
truly terrible takes, social media is going to be carnage for a
while.
It's an astonishing bit of thuggery, proper force and
everything. I've seen "gouges" where it's just "fingers near the
eyes" but this was a proper attempt to squeeze the eyeball with
his thumb. It's not far off an attempted blinding.

Etzebeth’s ban for an eye gouge unlikely to be nearly as harsh
as you think

> It was a career-first red card for Etzebeth, or at least from
what we can determine, it’s absolutely his first at
international level, which is a factor for starters. The one
previous ban has been for an attempted headbutt against
Australia, which resulted in a two-week ban, and that was all
the way back in 2012.

recently for eye-gouging and received three and four-week
suspensions, respectively. On both occasions, Mapimpi’s actions
were deemed to reach the low-entry points.

I asked AI for Eben Etzebeth's yellow card history, since this
is his first red.
Eben Etzebeth’s four yellow cards in
international rugby came for different types of foul play:
- Dangerous tackle (high contact) – penalized for upright
tackling where his shoulder made contact with the opponent’s
head/neck.
- Repeated infringements – carded when South Africa had been
warned for persistent penalties and he was the next offender.
- Illegal ruck entry/maul offence – punished for entering from
the side and using excessive force.
- Off‑the‑ball incident (striking/shoving) –
cautioned for unnecessary aggression away from the ball.
That is all he has picked up in 141 matches - yes, I was a tad
surprised!
But it shows he knows how to play on the edge but not over it.
So he would clearly know where the line is drawn at fingers to
the eye.
The Boks had won the match, were minutes away from the end of
the game.
He had no need to try and intimidate/irritate the opposition.
Which leaves the question why?
Complete brain fart?

He got off very lightly for the one listed as “Dangerous tackle
(high contact)”, which was the head hit on Atonio in the RWC 23
QF. It was identical in almost every respect to the one that
Owen Farrell eventually got a ban for, but the bunker had
apparently forgotten that decision.
It raises a wry smile when Bok fans whinge about being treated
unfairly, because as an England fan we have seen many more
examples of England players being treated objectively more
harshly than their counterparts from SH countries. Often by TMOs
called Marius…

I suspect a lot more will come out when this is fully
scrutinised. The investigative process won't take too long. I'm
not convinced he'll get a long ban, but we'll see.

One could equally point to Owen Farrell's seeming attempt at
decapitating Esterhuizen, which didn't even garner a penalty.
But that was Saint Owen.
