Or keeps enough distance to be a viable option if a pass is

For sure he's been involved in a big year and had some standout
moments that he should be proud of and it looks like as long as
he carries on the way he is with the pressure of being him and
what's about to hit him then we can all own him as an
Englishman. I'm not as 'super excited' as most about him as I've
seen too many false dawns of the new messiah and want him to
have a chance to learn and grow without the weight of the world
on his shoulders.
If he consistently makes 15+ plus tackles, wins turnovers,
scores a try a game and involved in 2 or 3 others for the team
then brilliant. Let's see how he responds to a dip in form,
should one happen and see then. We all look brilliant when
everything is going our way.

To be a viable option he'd need to be behind the player passing,
which he only was as Roebuck flopped over the line (and only
because he got bumped backwards in the contact he made with the
NZ defender). Also, I thought you already established a pass
wouldn't be needed because there was - and I quote - "no chance
the covering tackler would have made it there"? Your argument
has holes all over it - but that's because you know he ran
across the defender and should have been pinged.
It's really not a big deal though in this case, like I said
before - wouldn't have changed the outcome of the game either
way. But hopefully the coaches had a word with him to nip it in
the bud so he doesn't have brainfarts like that in future that
do have consequences for the team.
It's obvious he's got the potential to be a player that
generations look back on as one of the (if not the) best in the
world... but the self-confidence he has does need to be
controlled so it doesn't stray into arrogance and complacence.
If he can rein in silly moments like the above then we're in for
a treat.

In his defence, he got away with it twice in that game. The
nature of backrow play is to play to the ref.

Nope. My argument is that he wasn't needed for a pass. However,
if I conceded that the covering tackler would have made it
(which I don't), then he still wouldn't be giving up a penalty
as he would be a passing option.
