I'm sure they do, but there's plenty in England that almost

I think it is more along the lines of that they won't ping the
player who did the assist.
Another way to look at it is if you pass the ball to someone,
then you are immediately offside as the ball is behind you. But,
penalising you fort being offside would be silly

will be covered under Law 9.3
You have the following get out of jail cards
Supporting a teammate: It is not obstruction if a player is in a
legitimate position to support their teammate by receiving a
pass or forming a maul, although close play may still have the
same effect.
Legitimate support lines: A player can run a line that
incidentally blocks a defender if they are legitimately
supporting their teammate, for example, by being in a position
to receive a pass.
"Intentional" is the key: The key factor in obstruction is
whether the referee deems the action to be an intentional
obstruction. A player who is not the ball-carrier can't move to
block an opponent trying to tackle the ball carrier.

He was ahead of the ball and changed his line. In real time it
doesn't look like much but it's the sort of needless thing that
will cost a team badly at some point.
Anyway, I think a chunk of people dislike him because he comes
across as a bit of a knob. Why do the "characters" the game is
apparently crying out for have to be utterly tiresome?

I think that's a little harsh. He's only had one year as a
senior player. In that time, he's had the opportunity to win 5
competitions. He was in the team that won the biggest
international competition he was part of and made the final of
the biggest club competition. By the end of this week, he'll
hopefully also have been part of the team that does an Autumn
clean sweep.
It's not bad going and I'm struggling to think of many kids
who've had a better first year.

Completely agree. I've never understood this argument that the
game is in desperate need of "characters". Why not just try
marketing the actual sport..

little deviation some distance from the player with the ball,
and there was no chance the covering tackler would have made it
there. And if he had, then Pollock would have been in position
to take a pass. So, in either cases, it wouldn't have been a
penalty.

"Very little deviation" = clearly changes his line to the left
to take out the chasing defender?

With half an eye on what happened around the Womens RWC I think
part of growing the sport is appealing to the Social Meeja
generation. There is still room for a jolly good old curmudgeon
or two, though....
