remain in existence. The only way to make the game affordable
would be to slash player wages - and that simply isn’t going to
get any support. I don’t think different league structures or
competitions will make any difference. The players are paid at
an artificial level for what the consumer is willing to
contribute. Not saying it’s fair and I’d love rugby players to
get more than soccer-ballers but it ain’t going to happen.

The argument for a franchise is that because there is no
prospect of relegation it encourages investment into the
infrastructure of the clubs and increases the value, the clubs
would remain the same no new names, and it would add two champ
clubs to the league.
No relegation means there is not the prospect of losing your
revenue stream overnight and ruin, the application process for
the clubs would look like the PWR process.
The big problem would be that two clubs, both of who have names
that start with S, would fail the PWR process as mens clubs.

That would suggest that Sarries' shenanigans inflated salaries
in Japan and France as well which I'm not sure is the case. My
understanding is that Sarries were looking to keep pace with the
money already on offer in the Top 14 so they could compete in
Europe.

Thinking outside the blue sky envelope, why do we feel the need
to try and control everything? I've said it before and I still
believe that if you just let market forces rule it will
eventually settle into a scenario that is more acceptable. Its
no good having a world beating team stuffed with Stars as
boredom would set in pretty quickly.
And another thing. Why are the Coaches and players not
Contracted on a much more results and productivity based system.
Yes, pay them a livable basic salary but make the rewards for
reaching appropriate goals so good that there would be no doubt
over where the effort and loyalties lie.

The term “free market” is sometimes used as a synonym for
laissez-faire capitalism. When most people discuss the “free
market,” they mean an economy with unobstructed competition and
only private transactions between buyers and sellers. However, a
more inclusive definition should include any voluntary economic
activity so long as it is not controlled by coercive central
authorities.
Using this description, laissez-faire capitalism and voluntary
socialism are each examples of a free market, even though the
latter includes common ownership of the means of production. The
critical feature is the absence of coercive impositions or
restrictions regarding economic activity.
Coercion may only take place in a free market by prior mutual
agreement in a voluntary contract, such as contractual remedies
enforced by tort law.

Who on earth would get bored with that apart from fans of the
opposition?

Sort of the extreme ends of the “free market economy” voluntary
socialism can be considered a form of anarchy or Marxist
philosophy applied to a form of free market economy.

I think it suggests that Sarries desperation to keep pace with
those markets partly led to the problem I described. They
didn’t cause global player fees to rise, they caused an
artificial increase here by trying to match them through a
sustained period of cheating for which they have never been
properly sanctioned.
