If the league increased from 10 teams to 12 teams, wouldn't we
have two more home games, so we'd sell more beer etc?

Wouldn’t teams also need bigger squads? We’re already told that
players have too many game minutes. 22% more games also means
more injuries are likely.
And more games means more crossover with Test windows which
again means more players needed.
What’s a squad player cost? In round figures £80,000-£100,000
each? How many more would a team need? 3-4 maybe?
That’s a lot of beer that needs to be sold

Sadly I'm not sure there's a magic bullet. Domestic top League
rugby in this country and most other countries has always been
reliant on rich owners to subsidise the teams. I don't see where
the change comes from to make rugby a what's up "sustainable"
sport

Most of the premier league football clubs lose money, unless you
have franchise leagues like US sports, most sports clubs lose
money.
Even if broadcast revenue increased to match the Top 14, the
wage cap would increase and clubs would still not make a profit,
or break even, as most of the owners seem fairly content to lose
money, and would compete against each other and the French and
just increase costs.
10 out 14 of the French clubs also lose money.

The only way that you probably control the losses is by moving
to a franchise league with no automatic promotion or relegation,
which seems to be the preference of the Prem clubs, with a 12
club model.
But the NFL and MBL and the other US franchises have no real
competition, which the prem does with the TOP 14, and even then
a number of US teams run at a loss and borrow money against the
value of the franchise.
It was said the only way to make a small fortune from a vineyard
is to start with a large fortune, and most sports are the same.

True, but we're now 10 years further on and still "making a
profit" is a vague hope in the future. Mark Evans suggested
franchises from the moment he became CEO, and I tried very hard
to believe him wrong. I wanted to support Harlequins, not a
mish mash of London Irish, Wasps, Harlequins and Saracens. But
where are those clubs now? Two are gone and the third is never
going to make a profit on their current ground. Just how long
can the current sugar Daddies keep bankrolling us?

Sarries spent years cheating the cap. This inflated the prices
players agents demanded. Clubs then overspent to keep up. Now
some are bankrupt or going that way. It isn’t the only reason
rugby is struggling but I’m still staggered that Sarries remain
in existence. The only way to make the game affordable would be
to slash player wages - and that simply isn’t going to get any
support. I don’t think different league structures or
competitions will make any difference. The players are paid at
an artificial level for what the consumer is willing to
contribute. Not saying it’s fair and I’d love rugby players to
get more than soccer-ballers but it ain’t going to happen.

I'm not sure rugby (or maybe any sports) will ever make a
profit. If they become more popular, then players start to ask
for more money and fans expect more from the games and clubs. I
think we have to accept that rugby either has to be an
ego-boosting hobby for very rich men who don't mind losing
millions or that it becomes amateur again.
Edit: to add to that, is "sports make money" really a desirable
goal. Some things in life don't have to be profit-making. We
don't (or shouldn't) demand that art galleries and museums run a
profit. Maybe we should treat sport that way, too. Not saying
the government should subsidise million pound salaries.
