Steward's in the squad.
He's immensely frustrating because he's genuinely become a good
all round attacking player who uses his size well but
distributes well too. He just will always get stepped and miss
tackles.

Steward has worked quite hard on his weaknesses. He's faster now
and has a decent swerve. I'd still rather see one of several
other 15s, though.

I still worry about Steward's defensive positioning, though -
and he doesn't (and probably can't) offer the playmaker option
in attack that Borthwick seems to want against the top teams.

Steward may well have improved. But he was picked a number of
times, seemingly on the basis of being good in the air. Sadly,
he wasn't so good on the ground, which is where the vast
majority of the game is played.
It's like picking a hooker because his lineout throwing is
good... But he can't scrummage.

...or very good in open play but cannot scrummage.

His defensive positioning is his downfall and his comparative
lack of pace not allowing him to recover from it, his
distribution is better this season but he is not a playmaker in
the accepted sense.
He also is not the sort of fullback favoured by the attack
coaches last club, may be useful against SA.
We need to decide who is the first choice 10 and 15, and 12 and
13, with the next RWC in mind, constantly changing is not
helping us have a consistent style of play.

He's come on this season as a secondary playmaker. Still not top
quality, but he's getting some quick, wide passes away under
pressure.

It might be an early callup for England he'd automatically be
our greatest player of all time before too long if he wanted to
play for Suisse. I played youth rugby in Switzerland so I can
vouch for this :D

that is now the key skill, as the ball is thrown in at the
lock's feet

That Great rugby power has now missed out. as he is in the A
team to play the NZ xv.
