Far to many NIMBY's getting in the way these days.
Bit like the Golf Club that was made to close owing to one
complaint and the Cricket Club as well.
Some people need to get a life or move.

Nothing to do with NIMBYs.
We just need the RFU to make a proper, well thought out
proposal.
Just saying that they are going to increase the number of people
at gigs by 30,000 and increase the number of gigs by 400% and
make the finish time later without any consideration of the
wider picture - e.g. you do those people get home after the
local train services at Twickenham have finished.
We don't want thousands of people dossing on the pavements
around the stadium again (like we did with the Lady Gaga gig.)
The council know that the proposal is rubbish. They don't need
the local residents telling them too.

Interesting that the blame for the bad behaviour is now being
put on hospitality guests rather than rugby fans. I wonder where
the evidence for that came from, since hardly anyone gets
arrested.

That is not what the licensing act 2003 says though, the RFU
just seemed to be having a punt at getting changes more in hope
than expectation, no real mitigation of the problems in the
application.

I wonder how many people living there have jobs locally, though,
and so benefit from money spent in the area? If most commute,
there's little incentive. (I don't know what the truth is on
that.)

You can still benefit from money spent in your town without
working there. It pays for other jobs in town, it keeps
restaurants open, it allows the council to charge higher rents…
It’s the same logic that leads governments to want to host major
sporting tournaments - even if the tournament itself is
loss-making, people coming into the host cities boost the
economy by spending money.

I guess we all have to live with the changing demographics, and
these changing demands on what happens in our localities
compared to that which was lived there 50 years ago (for
example)
My first visit to Twickenham ever was to watch the Calcutta Cup
in 1981, as a wide eyes 18yr old London based undergraduate,
fresh up the M4 from the back end of a very rural Wiltshire.
I can't remember too much other than sharing home made whiskey
from stone jars offered by some very amicable, kilt wearing
Scots who wore a dirk in their socks.
The crew I came along with were from Thames Polytechnic Old Boys
RFC (Eltham Well Hall Sports ground) and we came in a mini-bus
we parked in the W.Stand Car Park.
How times have changed, as have the demands on Rugby and RFU
Do the RFU stay put or do they look at the fuller commercial
options of exploiting an entertainment stadium asset in another
area where they'd be more welcome? Twickenham stadium could be
knocked down for housing which would sell to a captive market.
With this, the Twickenham locals would no longer have the match
day/ concert event issues and everyone is happy?

Interesting point. The land value would be huge. But I doubt the
locals would be happy with a few high rises appearing, and the
associated pressures on local amenities, infrastructure etc.
Better the devil you know, methinks.
As for earlier visits to Twickenham, I remember going with
schoolmates back at the end of the 70s. Very different times! At
least they no longer have the long metal benches that used to
freeze your ar*e off!

If the RFU really want to change their licence, then they should
present a well thought out proposal to the residents and
council.
The last proposal seemed like it was drawn up in amateur hour.
Eg. One of their main mitigations for the disruption from 80k
people leaving the stadium was to put up a few signposts.
Also, remember that a concert crowd is different from a rugby
crowd.
The stadium tries to get the rugby crowd to stay in the fan
village after the game and then leave in dribs and drabs. Gigs
normally finish later and everyone leaves after the encore. You
need a plan to deal with this otherwise you get another Eminem
crush.
