I'm very familiar with how the Saudis operate and they don't
usually bother with something as asinine as this. Has it even
been confirmed they're involved? Usually they are front and
centre, with a very clear picture on how exactly they're going
to take things over and no-one is left in any doubt that they're
in charge. This doesn't seem to be the same at all; there's a
lot of speculation about "private investment from Saudi, US, and
       UK" but that's it.
There's essentially no money in this R360 approach, so it
doesn't make business sense, and it's a sport that barely gets
any viewers, so it doesn't make sponsor or sportswashing sense
       either.
Is it just a vehicle for some private venture types to pretend
they're serious in order to get leverage for future deals that
       might actually pan out?

Rugby overload in my view. I took out a Premier Sport Sub and
used it once. I might go for a long weekend jamboree of rugby in
a City but an extended tournament over several weeks and
locations is just not floating my boat.

For sure, Deadly. I've always worried franchising would happen
and I still feel it will, whether we as fans want it or not.
These things can sometimes be disruptors to stimulate change.
When wendyball tried to implement that breakaway money bags
league and everyone said no and the fans pulled out. What
happened? FIFA implemented it's club world cup which targeted
the same teams and still got them all playing in a tournament
for mega bucks in a location not convenient for fans but nicely
timed for summer holidays in Europe.
The Hundred in Cricket was a response to concerns that the
county game had been losing money for years and players were
looking more to franchise leagues rather than staying with
England. So helped fix one problem but did nothing to improve
the other. Why? Money is more important.
France already feels like a franchised league, the URC might as
well be one and with at least 5 teams now with megabucks owners
in the Prem, it won't be long before they start agitating for
more opportunity for financial growth and unlimited salary caps
for players. The Champions Cup can them be reformatted into a
franchise Champions League type thing, International windows
       outside of that etc etc.....
The ultimate aim of R360 might not be to implement their own
thing but trigger all of these other things where they can be
involved so who knows and seeing squads like Bath, Toulouse,
Bordeaux with more superstars and others facing off, it's hard
to argue it doesn't grow the game.

Arguments based on things you make up aren't very strong. For a
start, the FIFA Club World Cup predated the ESL by 20 years and
the full world cup style format predated the ESL by 4 years. The
       two could have comfortably co-existed.

Genuinely funny. He's clueless and arrogant with it, a wonderful
       combination.
Also this comment under the article was worth a laugh on its
       own:
"I played amateur rugby in the 80 and 90s. Saracens fielded 15
teams every week. Barnet, next door 6, Finchley 6, Hendon 6.
Over 500 players turning out every Saturday. That is more than
the prem's 10 teams. Today most clubs are lucky to field 2 teams
a week. Professional rugby has not served the rugby playing
community at all. It needs new ideas, because the old ones have
driven a popular game available to anyone with a pair of boots
into the ground. Go for it Mike any new idea is better than the
       status quo."
Just hilariously daft. If your concern is the rugby playing
community, then R360 is one of the worst developments you could
think of. Pro rugby at least has a link to local communities.

Also, The Hundred was intended to make money but was also
targeted at a new audience. It was nothing to do with English
players playing for franchises instead as they still can and do.
None of the major franchises are played in the Northern
Hemisphere and so there's no clash. The IPL is the only serious
contender and and players either don't play a full series or
       England works round it.

Yeah, but it's a link back to amateurism JG. Which is when
absolutely everything was rosy all the time! Rugby Values, 20
pints down the clubhouse, work sports teams etc etc... Even if
some of the stuff that went on back then was questionable. But
never mind.... I'd hazard a guess that the commenter was
probably 18-30 in that period! Everything will be just fine if
we create a new 'elite' competition that tries to smash existing
clubs and international competitions because the existing setup
means that 33x15 teams from yesteryear are not doing so any
more. Never mind the rest of the world changing in that time...
Everyone seems to need to have a 'big' idea now. Rugby has some
very good points and some very bad points. Some of what some
think makes it great, others think holds it back. Ultimately,
rugby has had coming up to 30 years as a professional sport, and
on the whole it has been run in an amateur fashion. It's a real
muddle to fix but, sure as heck, harking back to the 80s and
R360 are neither of the answers to longer term survival.
For Tins, R360 has the upside of a lads on tour thing so that
Hask, Payno and Tins can go on a lads tour around the world
doing the podcast. Hask can DJ, Tins can network etc.
