I look at it sometimes, I used to be a royal marine officer, and
read some of the military stuff, but the amount of writers who
claim to be ex special forces and in particular SEALS is
remarkable, mostly the only way they would have been a SEAL is
in sea life, there is a worrying obsession with firearms, have
never replied or written on there, because of that.

The Women’s Rugby World Cup final was a record breaker, with a
peak audience of 5.8m viewers tuning in across BBC TV and
streaming to make it the most-watched women’s rugby union match
EVER on UK television, AND the most-watched rugby match of the
year.

Went to four of the England games with wife and children
including the semi and final, and it was a well run event, the
only issue i had was apart from the final (watched on iplayer)
the TV coverage which was provided by world rugby and then
provided by their swiss/chinese broadcast provider who in turn
employed the company the works for TNT, was a bit rubbish, not
that many cameras and weird angles, and not showing replays when
they needed to.
They need to get better for the next world cup in Australia.

Really good piece poorfour.
As a family, went to all the Irish group games, and the Canada v
NZ semi-final in Bristol (wife also got a ticket for finals
day).
Absolutely loved the tournament. The vibe was happy all the way
through, and I couldn't pick a highlight from the games -
possibly the NZ haka and the Irish response in Brighton, was
genuinely goose-bump inducing. If not that, then Brazil's
penalty against South Africa - their first ever points at a
World Cup, and got a cheer as loud as anything else we heard.
And the crowds were, well, rugby crowds - I lost track of all
the randoms I chatted to around the grounds. And the players
will have inspired, 100%. My daughter is 9, and she was just as
excited to have Alex Tessier sign her world cup ball as she was
Jorja Miller (though Aoife Wafer giving her hug topped it all).
As an aside, my daughter got 36 signatures on her match ball
across five teams - making a XV out of those players, blimey
they'd give England a game.
The memories for her - and us - will last, and hopefully she
will carry that into her playing. I've seen a lot of women's and
girl's clubs on social media going into a recruitment drive off
the back of Sunday and the tournament as a whole. Having players
like Ellie, Ilona, Meg as the poster girls for the tournament is
huge, as is stuff like the Rodeo celebration, or Asia
Hogan-Rochester's glittery make-up, or Stacy Waaka's smiles, or
Georgia Evan's pink bows - I cannot imagine that there isn't a
single person - player or fan - who won't be able to look at one
part of the tournament and associate with it. Which is great for
engagement, and hopefully playing numbers.
The other thing about the profitability of the Red Roses.
England v Ireland in the Women's Six Nations next year. We've
got 7 tickets on the Early Bird sale - five adults, two children
- for a grand total of £85. That is an insanely cheap amount for
a full international at HQ. I know that the sport is still at a
stage where the tickets need to be affordable/cheap to lure
people in. But to that end, I think that we are also lucky - as
fans - to be at the "ground floor" level of the sports
development, where we can still get affordable tickets, we still
get access to the players, and can still enjoy the growth of the
sport close up.

I've said elsewhere that Mrs Yareet and I have been together for
18 years. In all that time, she's shown (at best) a passing
interest in rugby.
Until she found the women's game. It's now not unusual for her
to take the kids to the Stoop to watch the women without me.
Queue jokes about it being Quins that made her love rugby
🙄🤣.
On Saturday we were in the crowd (sitting immediately behind the
Canadians' friends and families - tough crowd!) and Mrs Yareet
was fully invested. She stopped just short of wearing an Ellie
wig but she was just as tense/excited/delighted as I was.
She's now a massive evangelist for women's rugby and is getting
a group of families together from our son's school to go to the
Lightening game.

Re: the pricing, as far as I can tell (the RFU doesn’t release
separate accounts for the women’s game) the games at Twickenham
make about as much (proportional to the size of the crowd) in
food, beverage and merch sales as the men’s games do. I’d expect
ticket prices to rise gradually as stadiums start to fill out
more, but it’s certainly excellent value right now.
For anyone who’s interested and doesn’t have the email, tickets
are now on sale for the PWR Final, being held at the Stoop on 28
June. You can access it via the usual ticketing site - just move
the calendar on until June and click on the date to bring it up.

One young man has a gift to treasure from Saturday, clearing the
stadium (very) late in the day McKinley Hunt was having photos
taken with her family, a young lad, at most 11, politely asked
if she would sign his ball. This she did and then gave him her
Canada tracksuit top! A truly great gesture, especially as she
said she was retiring after this match, from internationals I
believe, and must have made his night. The lad was clearly
shocked at the gift as it had to almost be thrust into his hands
a second time in his disbelief. Brilliant!

That's the best article I've read on the post RWC world of
women's rugby.
If I may add a few comments on NZ (& OZ) from my perspective.
We're at least 2 world cup cycles behind England in terms of
professional rugby structures and competitions.
The professional competition is 4 super teams providing 6 home &
away games plus everyone gets a semi playoff. This is an
improvement on 2024. The other issue is teams only assemble on
Thurs for the weekends game. In addition the FT professional 7s
players don't play
The biggest issue for NZ is OZ. The Aussies are light years
behind the other women's professional codes of rugby league,
AFL, football & even netball. Even thou the Aussies have a 6
team (incl Fiji) competition NZR & AU are reluctant to combine
the leagues due to costs and the standards between the two - I
wouldn't be surprised in the 4 NZ teams all made the semis.
The Black Fern hooker(Georgia Ponsonby) is off to Trailfinders ,
and if another 6-8 players (especially the tight 5) followed her
to the PWR it would help bridge that gap. In simple terms the
gulf between our FT professional 7s and the 15s rugby is
significant.

Alana Borland has also signed for Trailfinders, so that is 2 of
your 6, but the allure of the olympics and the gold medal seems
to harm New Zealand.
with where the Olympic Games fall 1 year before the World Cup
and the problems of then trying to incorporate sevens players
into the team in a short amount of time.
New Zealand need to choose to concentrate on the full game like
England did, or keep the two squads apart.
