It’s been an exceptionally good year for England Womens sport so
far. The European football Champions and now deservedly Rugby
World Cup Champions. It was one of those games that England were
supposed to win but in the back of your mind you have a nagging
doubt because somebody might get sent off again or we suffer
from nerves and Canada play out of their skins. I needn’t have
worried at all. The team were superb. Huge congratulations to
the squad, coaches and everyone else involved with the campaign.
Wish I’d been there but had to watch from abroad but it looked
like a fantastic occasion.

There was good justification for being nervous - England have
lost in the Final so many times now (after leading at half time
in several of them) that there would always be a nagging doubt
that something would go wrong.
Canada had been justifiably praised (and analysed) for Kevin
Rouet’s stunning attacking system, particularly given how they
took the Black Ferns apart last week. The Ferns themselves have
been so good at peaking for the RWC that their weaknesses had
been glossed over a bit.
What hadn’t been given enough attention was the quality of Sarah
Hunter’s defensive system. The Red Roses defend like no-one
else. They are happy to absorb the pressure until the opposition
tires or makes a mistake. They can hold an attack for long
periods without giving up ground, and if they do end up
conceding yards, they trust their goal line defence and
jackallers to turn the ball over far more often than they
concede.
The BBC stats said that the Roses had 40% possession in that
game - but they won by 20 points against the second best team in
the world. Canada needed nearly four times as long in possession
to for each point they scored compared to England. This was not
a one-off, either. It has been similar in all of their RWC games
except against Samoa and Scotland.
For the Red Roses, every match is the Rumble in the Jungle. And
they’re playing Muhammad Ali.

Okay, somebody has to ask. . .
What was the attendance?

Brilliant stuff. Our forwards absolutely dominated, pressure got
to Canada, and we did almost nothing wrong. Amazing by the
England team.
It does have to be said that whoever is running Canadian rugby
should hang their head in shame that their fantastic team had to
crowdfund to be here. The second best team in the world
shouldn't have to resort to that.

Rugby, men's or women's, is even more of a minority sport in
Canada than it is here, by a fair distance.

Why are Canada so good?
Do they have a good league system?
Or is aa big sport in certain provinces?

Slight point of order but they didn’t have to crowdfund to be
there.
According to the BBC, costs for every team to be here were
covered by World Rugby and the Canadian team are all pro.
The crowdfunding was to cover the difference between what they
currently get from the Canadian RFU and what they
Roses/French/Ferns get. That worked out to be around $1mn.

Delighted for the Red Roses and had a superb day at Twickenham
supporting them. Had a fantastic view of Ellie Kildunne’s try.
Hats off to Canada too, what a run to the final. The Red Roses
defence was something else.
Atmosphere was the best I’ve known it at HQ in a very long time
with a really great, friendly crowd. One 1 pair of Red Trousers
spotted all afternoon and limited getting up and down to let
people to the bog or bar.

The make up of the crowds and the make up of the loos is
somewhat misaligned for this type of event. The queues for the
ladies between the matches were very long. Mrs Poorfour managed
her consumption carefully so as not to need to go, and I suspect
a lot of other people did too.
Less cynically, there was a fantastic sense in the crowd of how
special this occasion was, and I think most people didn’t want
to miss a moment.
