If anything he's the one who surprises me the least. After his
injuries he never regained his pace and always looked like he
was trying to high-knee his way through mud after that.
According to this he only managed five games across the last two
seasons for Ealing Trailfinders - including only a single game
last season:

I'm guessing his injury problems just didn't go away if those
stats are true. Therefore it's no surprise he's in Nat 1 - he
won't be commanding anything like the wage he previously did,
especially as he's now 31. If he was still rapid, he'd have a
chance of earning a Champ contract again - but if you're 30+ and
have lost your pace, you're done as a back three player.

What happened to Merrick?! He was touted as a big loss, in the
same vein as Tizard subsequently was.

I have some memory that he went to France - but, there was some
major illness with a family member and he left and came back.
(But, I may be misremebering.)

Yeah didn't he go to Clermont or something? Not quite the same

Rumour is Kyle Sinkler wants a prem return ahead of the RWC to
get back into the England squad. Hopefully Titi's contract is
up this year, and we didn't give a 33 year old Williams a 2 year
contract..that would be some money freed up to tempt him back? I
personally would have him back if he had a point to prove for
RWC selection

Clermont Auvergne, then Worcester warriors, Newcastle falcons,
Carcassonne, Chinnor, Tonbridge Juddians.

I saw that and wondered whether a Quins return was on the cards,
but then I remembered his attitude when he left and thought do
we need him?
