I suppose with everyone predicting such a bad result for us, we
have a reasonable chance of overperforming expectations.

It's pretty easy to understand - Marcus had a weird season last
season and his treatment on the Lions (despite performing pretty
well, especially at 10!) only served to emphasise that. We had
multiple meltdowns where we got properly battered. One of our
best players got his debut for England and promptly made an
absolute hash of it. Some of our other reliables were either
injured or some way off the pace. We had no consistency, had a
game plan that seemed to dull the one thing we could usually
rely on to work, and we lost our set piece.
All of that wouldn't matter for the new season if there was an
obvious path forward - i.e. if Wilson had gone at the end of the
season and big changes announced with a clear plan - but as it
is, we've seemingly been taken by surprise and are left
scrambling. The impact of the signings will be hard to judge as
a bunch of them won't be here for ages. The bad news has
outweighed the good - we've lost our head coach, we've promoted
from within with a bigger name acting as some sort of
consultant, one of the most impressive young players in the
country will be lining up for Sale instead of us, several of our
players have a confidence-shaking season behind them, we have a
weirdly large injury list, and there's been no single headline
signing to make the more casual fan sit up and take notice.
It's entirely possible that Turner, Williams, Treadwell, Petti,
etc hit the ground running and transform our play, but while
these are all good players it's nothing like getting a big name
Aussie or a media darling back, and the chaos around the
management and general feeling of lurching from one crisis to
another requires a lot more than an evolutionary change to fix
the narrative. If we'd smashed the warmup matches, that would be
something, but right now there's no way anyone can look at a
team that underperformed last season and expect any improvement
despite some pretty good recruitment.

Careful, you'll be accused of being negative!
I think we all expect a (understrength) Bath to still turn us
over tomorrow, but I guess the main thing I'd accept losing if
we at least looked like a good side. Lineout, defensive shape,
dropped balls are the basics to keep so that would be a start.

To put a glass half full spin on it, a few years ago after not
making any big name signings, the preseason summary in one of
the rugby papers for Quins was 'it's going to be a long season'
with a predicted finishing position of 7th or 8th.
That was 2011.
If our forwards can have more impact than last season then our
backs will have a bit more space to work with.

I'd be interested in seeing what the predictions were for Saints
ahead of the 2024/25 season, too!
