Somehow, I can’t help but feel that had Quins finished top 4
nobody would be complaining.

A fair question @Yareet and I appreciate that outside of Bath
you can make arguments for anyone outside of Newcastle and maybe
Exeter that they could be in the playoffs over the last 2
seasons.
Again, with the exception of Bath, we've had a high churn of
players that would still be starting here had they stayed (Louw,
Collier, Andre E, Marchant), or not retired (Marler, Gray,
Symons) and haven't been replaced, either through mis-guided
recruitment or a presumption of readiness for some academy
talents (some of whom have already gone to start in other places
(Tizard, Jibulu))
As much as the position in itself was disappointing, the
performances against -
Gloucester away
Leicester away
Both Bristol games
Sale Home
Those performances were just a groan from start to finish, with
no semblance of a gameplan, or a sense of where they fit in a
long-term strategy (this much bandied 3 year plan) which did not
fill a lot of fans (author included) with any degree of
confidence.
Looking at the post-Gustard era in rough data -
2020/21 - 89 Tries in 22 games (4.04 tries per game), 13 wins
(13 tries, 2 wins in the playoffs)
2021/22 - 95 tries in 24 games (3.96 tries per game), 15 wins (3
tries, 0 wins in the playoffs)
2022/23 - 78 Tries in 20 Games (3.9 tries per game) 9 wins (Year
Wilson arrives)
2023/24 - 71 Tries in 20 Games (3.55 tries per game) 9 wins
(Wilson becomes HC)
2024/25 - 60 Tries in 20 Games (3 tries per game) 8 Wins
Now there are all sorts of variables that can go into it
(European runs, international call ups) but we've either
stagnated (which would be a generous interpretation) or gone
backwards when you look at the fact that we spend up to the cap
(apparently only half the league does now), have a generational
talent that we should have been building around, and a style
that we've moved away from for no tangible benefit.
I'm not looking to guarantee playoffs, that would be naive for
anyone outside of Bath as I'd previously mentioned. But as a
fan, there hasn't been a lot to believe in over the period where
Wilson has been in the coaching staff, particularly when he's
been head man.

Obviously not. We’d have played to potential.

Glad he’s gone, wish him well but don’t think we’re heading in
the right direction under him.
I see the calls for Nev to take over, but question what’s he’s
done to gain such confidence?
Surely we’ll cast a wide net, search world rugby and promote the
groundsman to HC!

It's strange that after all the months & months of complaining
about DW & wishing him gone, now he has departed over the Severn
Bridge we seem a bit twitchy about where the team goes from
here?
A similar situation to when Gustard disappeared into the
distance, the coaching team pulled together & we know where we
went after that.
I'm not sure that promoting from within the existing coaching
set-up is the answer but I'm confident that with all their
experience, our coaches will not let us down & we can take our
time to select the right man to be our new head coach.

I’m happy. He plainly wasn’t the right man for the job and
genuinely, I think we will be better without him.
Yes, it might come at the cost of this season, but right now, I
don’t think anyone was realistically expecting us to do any
better than lower mid table anyway. 7th or 8th is probably a
reflection of where we are, but a new coach might be able to
galvanise us to the point that we put up a vague challenge for
the play offs. I don’t see any better than that.

I still think the coaching group gets a little too much credit
for the title win. I still think a big part was the senior
players who wanted Gustard out and in the cold light of day
thought they'd better play the way they wanted too and win, else
they'd look stupid. Add to that the influence of the SA boys and
injuries meaning we had to bring in Lynagh and Murley. A lot
went right for them.
Not belittling what they did but I don't think it was the
biggest reason for the win.

I can't believe Matt Ferguson joined just to be a transition
coach. He's been waiting a year for "the right job" per articles
in the summer and was this really that job or was he told there
might be changes soon?

Yareet, can I borrow whatever it is you're taking that let you
forget the multiple humiliations Quins suffered under Wilson?
I'll give him some credit, we did our best work in Europe under
him, but then we also had that Leinster match and several
embarrassing failures, along with the disastrous second half of
last season in the premiership.
Just cause you loved the way Sale took us apart at the Stoop,
doesn't mean it wasn't a huge embarrassment for Quins ;-)
