brought to the women's game and (as a father of a daughter) her
positive championing of a different athletic body image. I'm
just a bit put off by her endless self-promotion when part of a
team sport - one that she's recently suggested she may not be
committed to for much longer. I just hope that if she does
decide to pursue other interests outside rugby, that the new
supporters she's attracted to the game continue to maintain
their interest

First few minutes of this talk about Maher and the wider impact
she is having - not so much self-promotion as a rising tide
lifting all ships and the work she has done to help others with
their social presences.
The Botterman/Jones episode also shows the impact that Maher has
had as she seems to be the only player that their co-host knows
but she is equally excited that Maher’s sister is a famous
FoodToker.
My guess is that most of us on this board aren’t the audience
that Maher (and others) are looking to engage with so I’m not
sure we’re the right people to be commenting on how she does
that.

I agree we are not the target audience, but my understanding is
that she is starting to alienate some of her target audience,
and that she tried to move into a social media presence that
was much wider than where she started.
She has then rowed back, my teens are saying that they don't see
her as authentic, and that in particular what she says in the
rugby based content does not match what she says in non rugby
content.
In the end you pay your money and take your chances.

It all feels a bit like Anna Kournikova to me. I don’t believe
Maher is wholly responsible for the media noise but she does
have to take a bit of responsibility for what she says. I can’t
be the only person that found the whole Bristol move to be
underwhelming and if you came just to watch her play a game
during that period, you’d leave thinking she simply isn’t that
good (yet). Does that build the women’s game? Don’t know, but
instinct says it can’t hurt. Does the atmosphere that my wife
(who showed no interest in rugby before now - even when she had
the opportunity to watch me!!) enjoys at Quins when our women’s
team plays? Yes as our family now watch women’s rugby regularly
and enjoy it. Again tiny sample but, in our house, it’s been
good athletes playing good rugby that has worked.
