Interesting article - thanks for posting Blucherquin.
For me, times have changed and so bring on ringfencing - for the
sake of:-
a) player welfare (the internationals play too much compared to
the Celts) b) the England team (the prospects for success would
be better) c) clubs being able to plan for the future more
confidently d) my nerves on match day...

It's not a surprise with this year's current league situation
that there are nervous sides, but for me part of what makes the
competition is the demotion. Without it, the season for most
teams would have been inconsequential weeks ago, once it became
clear how good Sarries and Exeter appear to be, again.
My preference would be to retain, but have a play off run. So
either bottom and top swap and next team have a home and away
game, or you do just the home and away game aggregate score for
the 2 affected sides (bottom and top).
This way you would likely see that there is no real comparison
at moment between most championship and premiership sides. Yes
you have the problem of what London Welsh did a few years ago by
bringing in some ringers, but you can set the rules in such a
way to stop .
The PRL is very protective of its own, understandable, but if
they really want to remove the fear or demotion, then why not
work with help the Championship, get 3 /4 teams minimum able to
be ready for promotion, make that league more viable, rather
than running scarred of whatever the FRU might want to do (which
appears very little at moment in aiding these teams / expansion
of the professional game).
I am still surprised that when the anglo welsh ended, they
didn't turn to the championship to create an inter league
completion - time may have been a constraint, but there is no
indication of that. If it was we could have had what we have
this year, for just one year and a new inter league competition
from next year.

The Anglo Welsh/Prem Cup would be good fun if it included the
top 6 Championship teams. (or even all Championship teams).
The Championship clubs would make some TV money and make a fair
bit out of ticket sales.
We would get 4 more derby games (L Irish, L Scottish, Richmond
and Ealing)
Wasps would get Coventry as a derby and also Glaws v Hartbury.
I also think that the teams would be evenly matched if the Prem
teams continued to put out development sides and the
Championship sides took it seriously.
There would have to be an element of player registration
(similar to the European comps) to stop Prem teams fielding
development teams for the pools and then fielding full strength
teams for the finals. Failure to prevent this would probably
result in a few safety issues. (I'm not sure that it would be
safe for a fully amateur Richmond front row to pack down to
Sink/Ward/Marler)

Saying that their is only one side capable of coming up and they
will not win a game is a bit like a boxer complaining that his
opponent cannot land a punch now their hands are tied behind
their back even though they won every game when their opponents
had their hands tied.
BTW - Jersey have bought their ground back.

If you ring fence it is opened up every couple of years to
financially vetted top team to come up via a playoff vs prem
bottom club and for compensation for having that happen and to
help them get profitable to be able to compete do a
prem/championship competition/cup. Help them financially become
strong and share some of the proceeds out to them to help make
championship viable longer term as well. It would be better to
have a stronger championship as well for player development.

Hmmmm. Saying that you can't have another Exeter conveniently
ignores Bristol, who are doing OK at the moment after several
seasons of trying to get promotion.
Saying that if Bath went down, the competition would be
meaningless is also wrong, as Bath don't actually meet the
criteria for promotion as far as I am aware, due to their ground
capacity (and I'm sure there are others).
It is a conundrum, and relegation is really not pleasant, but
how else do you make the second half of the season in any way
meaningful?

Bristol and Exeter aren't really comparable cases. Exeter grew
organically, keeping faith with a lot of their squad from the
championship and making additions here and there to get to the
place they are now. Bristol kept not being promoted, then
bankrolled by Steve Landsdown they hired Pat Lam as DOR on a big
salary and bought in players like Madigan while in the
championship. With the amount of money they've spent they should
be competitive. Exeter have said they probably wouldn't be able
to do what they've done if they came up now rather than in 2010.
Short of wealthy benefactors or a large grant from the RFU, the
financial difference between the Prem and the championship is an
obstacle that is very difficult to overcome for clubs looking to
make the leap.

Well as the Times bloke says, they'll probably come up with a
way of doing so with alterations to play-offs or similar. It
would at least finally allow us to rest England players properly
and give them at least half as good treatment as the Irish etc.

Why bother with a Season ticket same 4 matches to start every
year and if you loose those don’t bother with the league again.
