Should be an easy win for the Roses, even with this slightly
experimental team, but I am looking forward to seeing whether
Claudia Pena can cause them any problems from fullback.
In other news, Wales Women have just been hammered by their
Aussie counterparts 41-5 (albeit with some very harsh refereeing
decisions).

The old rugby saying “you can’t play without the ball” will come
into play I suspect, players will be looking to impress and they
will be ruthless.

Predictably ruthless display from England, marred a bit by
Marlie Packer’s red card.
Claudia Pena scored Spain’s try with a very decent line and
hand-off

which was never a red card, good try by Pena, but she found
herself one on one against Helena Rowland numerous times and was
shown a rugby lesson by her.

It wasn’t a particularly difficult game, but England got to try
out some combinations they would not have tried against tougher
opposition, and Spain got to test themselves against a better
quality of opponent than they will face in at least two of their
pool matches.
I would imagine both sides came away with things they wouldn’t
have learned in training, and a bit of match fitness after a 3
month break.
As a spectator spectacle it wasn’t so good, but that’s why it
was on iPlayer rather than a main channel. That said, personally
I am getting quite a lot from these warm ups in terms of
understanding the other teams in the tournament better and
seeing how their preparations have gone. This was probably the
most predictable match, but the Wales v Australia and Boks v
Black Ferns XV series have both thrown up some surprises, and
the Scotland v Ireland game was hard fought.

I have found the warm up fixtures very interesting as well, the
Canada v USA match is well worth a look, USA have developed
greatly since the pacific 4 competition.
How are the emerging nations supposed to develop unless they
expose themselves to the best, and the Spanish players seemed
genuinely happy after the match.
Are you suggesting Bod that only the top 4 women’s team play
each other as everything else is a mismatch, not sure that is
going to move women’s rugby on very much, or level the playing
field in the future.
England’s women are probably the most dominant team in any major
sport in the world at present, but playing them is a useful
exercise for any team.
