I'd say Tom Guest is in with a good shout for not kicking on. At
one point he was touted for England.
In terms of not getting much out of, Ollie Smith is also a good
candidate.

With Guest, I think it was more that he had the misfortune to
play at the same time as Nick Easter and Tom Croft. He always
played well for us, but Croft was a similar style of player but
a fraction better in all the ways that differentiated them from
the run of the mill, and Easter was just an anomaly - an old
school number 8 in the pro era whose intelligence and strength
offset his lack of pace. And then Guest had the misfortune to
break his arm in the one window of opportunity when Minty was
out and he had a chance to claim the shirt.

I can't be bothered to think about it enough to type out a squad
but this one would be very close to my own stab. I'd probably
swap the tightheads plus consider Ross, and not sure about
Green.

Surprised Dave Ward hasn’t made a few benches tbh, he was good
value.

I’d have De Wet Barry in at 12 - with the possible exception of
Paul Sackey have I ever seen a player put in less effort.
I’d also be tempted to have Anyanwu in at 13 - his performance
away at Gloucester last season deserves a place in this team on
its own.

12: Esterhuizen
13: Marchant
14: Monye
15: Brown
16: C Jones (could be Baxter tbh!)
17: Baldwin
18: Louw (Collier unlucky)
19: Robson (Kenningham makes a 6-2 bench, you could argue
Robshaw 6 / Kenners 7 in the starting team too. Or Will Evans at
7. Or Will Skinner at 7. Christ.)
20: Dombrandt (could easily start)
21: Dickson (just edges it over Porter)
22: Marcus Smith (could easily start)
23: Tyrone Green (though we're properly in a hole if Esterhuizen
gets injured in this hypothetical match, so maybe Northmore for
more flexibility)

Winston Stanley was injured with I think hip joint or could have
been shoulder so it’s a bit unfair to keep having a pop at him
as he never was able to play fully fit. We’ve had a few
unfortunate signings like that but it’s the nature of the game.
It’s no good me trying to pick a 23 as I would keep
remembering somebody I’d forgotten about or not being able to
choose between the Robshaws or Big Mo.
