Many a true word said in (questionable) jest… the salary cap for
PWR is £220,000. The clubs can pay for training, kit, travel and
food, and accommodation counts against the cap at a standardised
rate (so London clubs aren’t unfairly penalised), but that’s the
total payment for a squad that (including academy players, a lot
of whom are at uni) currently runs to 64 players for Quins.
Many of those players won’t be being paid and will be working
part time or taking jobs that allow them to fit their work
around their training, so in effect they are subsidising their
rugby careers.

I don’t believe that it is unfair to allow more commercially
successful businesses to invest in their squad while preventing
sugar daddy funding of clubs.
It is still not a free market but is linked to how they run
their businesses, if you look at the top 14 there are have and
have nots, but unlike the prem more than three men and a dog
support the have nots.
But with the much higher cap in France you still have sugar
daddy syndrome racing 92 being a case in point.
The PWR cap needs to be changed and with luck the increased
interest after the World Cup will allow that.
I think that people would still support less successful clubs,
but a club that is well run such as Quins should have an
advantage for being a viable enterprise, saracens would likely
not be as advantaged due to their smaller attendance.

It was intended as jest. I wouldn't normally put a smiley on a
joke but thought this might be a bit sensitive; it triggered
DazzaS 😁.
However, I thought Quins' owners were putting £2m a year towards
the women's team. What's happening to that?

I didn't think it was as much as £2m, but it will cover coaching
staff, medical staff, ground staff on matchdays, kit, travel,
food, accommodation, training facilities, the academy setup,
marketing and player salaries.
Some of that will be marginal cost on top of what's already
being spent on the men's side, but some of it will be separate
spend for the time being - for instance there are 4 dedicated
coaches for the women and IIRC they have to hire separate
training facilities because there isn't enough room at Surrey
Sports Park for both women's and men's teams (Ms Poorfour Maj
trains there with the PDG occasionally; there's currently only
one all weather pitch and the gym is big enough for one squad
but not two).

SSP was bursting at the seams when I visited around 8 years ago.
Not sure if there's a long term plan here as it all seemed a bit
makeshift then.

Lawrie has spoken about wanting to redevelop SSP to accommodate
the whole club (including the administrative side of things) but
I don't think he's mentioned a timeline for it. From memory the
first challenge is to find enough land at or near the site.

I don’t know if it’s still the same now but I’d heard that the
salary “cap” for the Women was only advisory and not implemented
in the same way as the Men. That’s why the usual suspects seemed
able to attract so many international players at the time.
Hopefully it is more strictly applied which may be why they
haven’t won anything for a season or two.
I’m not completely convinced that the loses shown are
quite what they seem. I know that if I had the money and it made
no difference to me to spend a few million on a club, it would
bring me huge satisfaction that I had provided hundreds of
people a living and entertained thousands and thousands more.
For me that would be well worth the money. Maybe it’s the same
for the many benefactors in the Premiership. I hope so.

Now that would be interesting.
Would it also in time lead to the home ground leaving
Twickenham?
