Nothing has changed, clubs need a wealthy owner, who is willing
to sink money into the club with no realistic expectation of
ever turning a profit, you may be breaking even at some point.
We have been in the same place since 1997 ownership wise, and if
we had a bigger ground with all the extra revenue that it would
bring, we would be about breaking even.
Sale and Saracens seen to be losing a lot of money and their
long term survival seems to based on the owners pockets more
than most.
The tv deal is not great but since the premiership alienated sky
and amazon are not interested it is a TNT monopoly and with no
competition in bidding not, Going to go anywhere in revenue.
A bigger prem league would increase match revenue, but again
teams that don’t own the grounds would not benefit as much as
those that do.
Beer at Sale and Saracens, would need to be at about £114 a pint
to cover their losses, not sure I would pay that for Wolfpack
lager.

Wow - that is horrible. And yes, for me there was new
information there, though of course we all know there are
losses.
Sale - Turnover: £9.1m Loss for the financial year: £7m. Urgh!
How much can they keep investing?
I've always known Saracens could never make money out of a
10,500 max stadium but £7.5m loss? Who can keep that up year
after year?
The only teams with a hope of breaking even from this list are
Northampton, Harlequins, Gloucester and Exeter.
Exter have done it before, Northampton are close. We reckon next
year could be THE year and Glos just need to search behind the
sofa for some spare change.

Simon Orange has said that Sale is his surrogate kid and he’s
just sold his business for £1bn so for now we’re ok. For now.

I would suggest removing the wage cap and introducing financial
fair play rules as used in football, so your wages are linked to
your revenue.
Would encourage teams to increase gates and and their support,
would also stop the building of huge long term unstustainable
debt, that makes the clubs depend on sugar daddy owners, and
dooms them to death if said owner is not around.
Also consider the clubs must own their ground, with no minimum
capacity, no football ground sharing or grounds owned by
councils.
Tiny crowd equals smaller wage budget.
This would encourage clubs to be sustainable, and reward clubs
with large attendances which grow the game.

The trouble with that approach is that it creates a vicious
circle. The clubs with the most revenue today earn around 3
times as much as the clubs at the bottom of the pile. Does that
mean that Quins and Saracens should be allowed to spend 3x as
much as Falcons and Sale on their squad?
I am sure Nigel Wray would agree that they should - but in
practice what it leads to is the situation we had when Saracens
were on their long cheating spree: the same team or teams
dominating the business end of tournaments year in year out.
While that’s great for their fans, it significantly reduces the
attractiveness of other clubs to their fans. The number of rugby
fans who will follow an underperforming side through thick and
thin seems to be much lower than the number of soccer fans who
will do the same. Competition has been key to the fan base that
the Prem has managed to build up, and taking that away in favour
of the teams that have managed to build a decent revenue base
today.
A better idea may be what the pro women players have negotiated
with PWR, where there is a revenue sharing agreement that should
mean that players’ earnings can grow in line with the earnings
from the game. I haven’t been able to find details of it (and it
may not be in force yet) but I believe it operates at league
level. It’s probably too late to implement something similar for
the men, but it’s the model that some US sports use, and it
seems to work.
