No problem, I think that there is a bit of self delusion with
the Welsh around their current problems, the regional system is
not developing young players, football is increasingly popular
and taking away the next generation of players and spectators.
Gatland did what most foreign coaches do prioritised today over
tomorrow, but just playing the bad players they have earlier
would not have made a significant difference, and you can’t make
a silk purse out of a sows ear.
Having two or three regions instead of four would be a
retrograde step, having two regions instead in the URC and two
in an Anglo Welsh league would probably be no better, as the two
Anglo Welsh league teams would need to be privately funded and
wouldn’t have many Welsh players if they want to be competitive.
To help the England team the premiership should go to 14 teams,
this exposes more players to high quality Rugby and gives teams
another 3 home matches for revenue.
I would not have started Ford against the USA and we should have
taken another 10 on the tour for experience, but the tour showed
that the jump from English club rugby to test is not that great
for good players, all the centres showed up well, Atkinson and
Northmore in particular.

Unless you bring in 4 teams' worth of foreign players who are of
premiership quality adding 4 teams to the Premiership will
reduce the quality. If you just added the 4 top championship
teams then you're just adding 150-200 championship level
players.

Some Championship level players have the potential to be good
players. But they are playing in amateur clubs for a small match
fees and as a result, are sitting at desk jobs Monday to Friday
rather than training full time.
The answer is to increase the number of professional teams. (But
- that is not simple)

I'm sure there are some who could potentially reach premiership
standard but equally there are loads already on premiership
clubs' books who won't and who play most of their rugby in the
championship anyway, with the occasional PRC appearance.

If you don’t start Ford, who do you make captain? IMO, from the
touring squad one of Ford, Slade, George or maybe Spencer needed
to play this game.

Ealing have certainly troubled Premiership sides in the Cup.
We do not know how good Worcester will be.
And it would be two from Bedford, Doncaster, Coventry or Pirates
- all of whom can be good on their day - and would be stronger
if they were full-time.

It's a hard balance to strike. If Ford is playing well, he
absolutely deserves to be in the squad given how green the other
10 options were. He's also a cracking 10 when on form. There's
also an element that you can spend so much time looking at the
future that you ignore the present. The flip side is Eddie
maaiiite and only ever really trusting 1 SH and leaving SB with
the choice of two old men in Youngs and DC and a load of players
with a handful of caps each.

I'd love that. But who is going to pay for it?

I don't think Ealing have ever come up against a Premiership 1st
team.

If you were visiting the bookies and had to bet on who would win
between a full strength Ealing and a full strength Newcastle for
a one-off match - - then who would you put your fiver on?
