Here’s what I’ve been contemplating this morning.
The consensus on this board seems to be that there has been a
slow decline for Quins since 26/6/21.
There have been odd flashes of brilliance and some great one-off
games but no silverware.
Including that 2020/21 season, Sale have made the playoffs 4 out
of 5 times but never won anything.
So, playing style and personnel aside, who should have the
happier fans? Is that one glorious season better than being (in
Al’s words) “the most consistent losers”?
From experience, btw, neither set of fans is particularly
ecstatic 🤣

Re the earlier point about the game V brizz at home. It was a
disaster because basics were non existent. The little cluster of
us who sit in the West stand all said before the game "as long
as we don't kick easy ball in front of their back 3, we should
be OK". What happened next? We proceeded to continually kick to
them with no chase and they tore us apart. If we could see that
before the game, why couldn't they? The one time we did kick
behind and chase, Murley won a holding on penalty against
Ibitoye. We ballsed up the lineout, of course.
Yareet makes a fair point re who should be happier and no doubt,
I'd rather have one Championship in that time than but if you
are always challenging the semis, you at least get the chance to
make small tweaks or benefit from a ball bounce which you can't
do in 7th. I like what Saints did this season, clearly targeted
Europe as no jeopardy in the league. Would have liked us to do
that in 21/22.
I think, for me, I want to see some variety against different
opponents and be more consistent in the set piece. Defence still
needs work but please god, go back to attacking at every
opportunity.

Next season won’t be much different as we really haven’t brought
in any quality bar maybe an improvement in the second row.
Probably another 7-8th place finish

Next season MAY be different as DW has the whole summer to
improve his excuses as to why Quins have lost again as he is
working out with the Wales team?

I’m not saying it wasn’t a disappointing season but a reminder
that our average, mean and median position in the league over
any meaningful time since rugby went pro…
(Eg the entire time, last decade, last five years)
Is….. 7th.
We’re basically 7th with a couple of quite fun blips.
There are fewer teams now admittedly,
Watching the play offs a reminder that we really don’t have any
brutal players in any position anymore. Can’t see a single name
an opposition would fear in terms of power.
Yes we have speed, flair etc and can get over the ball in
defence.
But we are seriously lacking in pure grunt.

Yeah overall 6-7 is about the true value of the club over the
years. BUT we were on average the most expensive team to
support, so the product cost and output aren’t of the same
acceptable standard to keep people grounded.

Except that's demonstrably not true, is it? Quins have the best
overall attendance and revenue in the Prem, consistently sell
out the Stoop and have a waiting list for Season Tickets.
There are enough people who are quite willing to accept our
ticket prices in exchange for what's on offer at the Stoop. It's
only a handful of keyboard warriors who aren't - and even then
it seems that most of you grumble incessantly but still keep
coming.

I understand the need to feel to jump on to my posts in general
but you’ve missed the point. I didn’t make any reference to
attendance. My point essentially is, paying top business class
prices for an econony class product. Staying grounded dosent
mean an exodus attendance wise, my point was people will be more
likely to not stay quiet and voice displeasure if the product
dosent match the price.

I think we can accept the cost but have the right to grumble
about poor performance in return. As long as it's not personal
and is balanced towards the good things as well, then we
absolutely have that right.

Are we really that much more expensive though?
You can really only compare us to Sarries. (i.e. cost of living,
drinks, food, infrastucture, etcs in Sale for instance is very
different to London.)
Sarries finished in the same part of the table as us.
From memory though, there wasn't much difference in our season
ticket prices.
I think some grades were more expensive than us, and other
grades were cheaper.
I think you could probably argue that buying a season ticket /
membership isn't the greatest investment at many rugby clubs.
For reference, I have just renewed my Richmond membership for
£140. All that gets me is discounts on tickets and drinks (i.e.
it doesn't include a season ticket at that price.)
For that money, I will get the option to watch an amateur team
getting pummelled by some of the more professional teams.
