I was there. Corporate hospitality. Several people in the group
had never watched rugby and were blown away by the game.
IIRC we put George Lowe on the wing, up against Varndell/Wade. G
Lowe was quick, but those two were rapid.

For pure speed Varndell was the fastest I came across. I first
saw him at the Dubai 7’s in 2006. He scorched everyone, if my
drunken (2006) memory is correct he was player of the series. I
last saw him at the Stoop in the Eng v Ire legends game last
year. Jeez, he looked like he could still play! (Minus the
       voluntary tackling).

I had 2 coach loads there! Brilliant day. Several of them now
come to The Stoop independently. My work here is done.

That said, I remember Lowe chasing down Varndell on the angle to
tackle him into touch at the Stoop a couple of years later.

Varndell was quick, and big. Sadly he seemed a bit lazy and not
a great defender. For speed I'd have gone for Charlie Walker.
Going back a few years, Andy Harriman. Going back a long way,
Paul Parkin (I dare anyone to look that up!) :)

Paul Parkin is still around and a STH and I see him at all the
home matches. At 16, I think he was the youngest player ever to
       play in the 1st XV.

How Andy harriman only ever got one cap sort of sums up the late
80's and early 90's mess that the pre pro game was, and shows
that it was not the good old days.

That's right. Lovely fella too, and very interesting to chat to.
       A champion sprinter IIRC.
