The taxman is coming

Today's Times reports that the Inland Revenue are investigating
Research and Development tax credit claims made by football
clubs. Chelsea, for example, claimed £3M. The article mentions
in passing that Harlequins and Northampton have also made
claims.

I can only find the aerticle from back in February about this
(archive link HERE

A lot of companies in all sorts of
businesses claim R&D tax credits and it's usually easy to make a
case that is accepted by HMRC.

That was my first thought as well - though it could equally be
related to our marketing approaches. The R&D regime is, as fred
says. pretty generous and you can claim tax credits on any
project work that is customised to your business.

I know in the world of brewing they have been clamping down
massively on what is genuine R&D it has got a lot tougher post

My experience is that HMRC have severely clamped down on R and D
claims and have ramped up their team reviewing them as they
believe that the scheme has been rather abused over the years.

They're probably not wrong, though.
